hi

i did something stupid. i purchased a ring. i wasn't happy with how it looked on my hand and tried to move it to be more in line with a finger. wile it was only a little out of line to me is seemed to be glaring. wile i was moving it i got hit by some lag now the ring is inside my hand and i can not click on it. any ideas on how to get to it so that i can move it. or should i just delete it and not by jewelry any more? I've been trying to get at it for a few days now and am ready to delete it and stay away for jewelery entirely.

I have this problem quite often. You can detach it by typing 'worn' in your inventory and it will be in the list. right click and choose detach.
To reposition it when you are out of edit mode though, I am not sure on.
Normally I will attach it to somwhere like my nose where it will stick out, edit it to stick out even further, reattach it to the right point and finish editing. There is probably an easier way but that is the only way I know.

This takes practice, but is very useful for such adjustments:

1) Get a posestand. They are free almsot everywhere. Stand on this to hold your avatar still.

2) Alt-Click on an object that is NOT attached to your avatar. Though preferably close. Rezzing a cube and positioning it near the area you are intrested in (in this case, your hand) is a neat trick.

3) Hold down Alt and move your camera around. With the view centered on an outside prim, you can now move inside your body. Your avatar is simply a hollow mesh.

4) Once you can see the ring, R-Click and edit. Doing so on the pose stand will help you align it to your finger as well.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

Heh I never knew that, Jessica. I always wondered why I could see through my avatar sometimes, and not others. Now I know! :)

Ctrl-Shift-R will put you into wireframe mode, so you can see inside your hand. Move the ring out and then click those keys again to go back to normal view.

Ctrl-Shift-R, Ctrl-Shift-R.... I'm trying to remember that for next time. I knew there was some key combination to do it but can never recall it when I need to dig a belly ring out of my stomach or what not.

Thanks

Also good to know when you make a little boo-boo, right after making any mistake, log off. When you come back, it will be back where it was originally. Just make sure you don't detach it before you Quit. When you detach-reattach, it will save your adjustments.

it's even easier if you find a place that allows object creation,
with open edit (ctrl+3), drag from inventory to ground, right click, choose attach - > [wherever], it'll be attached and in edit mode so the move handles should be visible

i have a follow up question, after what seems like forever struggling with clunky controls i finally got the ring where i want it. my next question is now it seem to only vaguely follow the hand sometimes it is on the finger sometimes it is near the finger. is this just the way it is or is there a way to correct this?

That's just how is, which is why I don't wear rings.

That's just the way it is. Unless some day LL adds attachment points for individual fingers, you have to live with it only looking right with your hand in the most common position.

No, there's another attachment point for watches and bracelets...it works fine.

Rings are problematic because hand position isn't mapped very well, and there is only one attachment point for 'hand', which is based on your palm. That is fine for holding a gun, but has no way to take finger positions into account.

Bracelets, watches and BDSM Cuffs use the forearm position. which is quite stable.

Most other jewelry also has stable points to attach to.

But for a ring... Well, they are best used in a static close-up scene, where the character is on a pose pall that doesn't allow the hand to move. Position the ring after they are in the pose, and take your snapshot. Then take the ring off again.

Oh, I'm glad to read this thread. I was wondering how to keep the ring looking alright in all positions.

The only time I have ever gotten a ring to stay generally where I wanted it was a male alt, who wore a rather massive signet ring on the middle finger of one hand. For the most part that looked OK, as long as you didn't look at it too closely.

thanks for the responses. i am just going to delete the ring and not buy them any more. the ring is transferable any one who wants it can have it just send me a tell in game. other wise i going to delete it. it is a gold band with inlayed blue sapphires very nice looking. are there any other products that are problematic like this?
