With the new Comcast *gag* policy of limiting bandwidth I'd like to install a meter on my PC just for ha ha's. I know right now the allowance is probably way more than I'll need......but this is the beginning of a trend and lets face it....they can change their allowance any time. When my fiance gets home he's gonna have a cow.... he's way into gaming and doing cool stuff on the web so.... I'd like to be able to see just how much I'm using, and 'we' use. Anyone know of some free software I can download to keep track of bandwidth?

my suggestion is get rid of comcast! I don't know of a meter I always wondered what I was DLing and uploading, I know I can hit 500G in a month of transfer easy uploading/DLing music to my web site. not including torrents or SL or any thing like that. and what is theirs set at 200G? and I think this is who it will hurt Torrent runners, movies etc. web host that transfer large amounts of data from home machines to servers and back and forth.
They are only doing this because they got caught throttling bandwidth, and were told they could not do it like that~!
Thank god for DSL and T1 lines. TV if I had to use comcast I think I would drop to dial up!

TWC is going to be far worse than the 250GB cap of comcast

From: Distilled1 Rush my suggestion is get rid of comcast! Not exactly what was asked, but ... ok. From: Distilled1 Rush I think this is who it will hurt Torrent runners, movies etc. web host that transfer large amounts of data from home machines to servers and back and forth. Yeppers, that's the target. They are also wanting people who basically run a business off of a residential account to pay the business rate like everyone else. If you care to read the fine print, you may find that your ISP is already doing something like this already, once you hit 2GB tranfer you get throttled back to like 10% throughput.

It's 250G actually.
But anyway....I just checked google for bandwidth meters and indeed a few do exist. I was just wondering if anyone could suggest a 'safe' one to download.
I would have gone with DSL except my fiance insisted on comcast because he's so into gaming and he wants the speed. In an earlier thread this was already discussed though.....and a few techies chimed in that really, it would be very very hard for the average SL user or web user to reach the 250G limit. It was broken down here by someone. And...I just read an article on MSN about Comcast doing this....some interesting points and observations there.

http://www.rokario.com/Been using it & checking the log files. So far I haven't even come CLOSE to 250 GB. Considering I play several MMO's, Half Life 2, Crysis, and tons of others online, along with various downloads *wink wink* I think thats a decent amount.

Too bad we can't sell our excess bandwith each month. I'm sure I don't go anywhere near those numbers. I don't know if my ISP(Cablevision) has similar plans or not.

If you live in a Comcast hosted area... Normally your only other option is DSL or wireless. Both slower, less reliable, and already capped. (>_< I used to use NetStatLive on my Win98 machine, but have found it to be less than friendly on my XP mashines. (T_T)

Don't forget, if you have more people in your house on line the numbers go up accordingly. I have 5 computers conected on my home network at any given time. Typically 2 on SL, 2 on WoW and one on Gaia.

Here is a nice lil app I use. Breaks usage down by daily, weekly, and monthly totals. And the best part, it's free

I just started using bitmeter2, and it is great. You can tell it what limit your ISP imposes over what length of time, and it will alert you if you reach some percentage (e.g. 75 or 80%) of that amount.

From: Distilled1 Rush my suggestion is get rid of comcast! Nice idea, but I cannot get DSL and so comcast is my only viable option. I suppose I could move, but I don't really hate comcast enough for that yet.

This is the meter I use and am quite happy with it.... http://www.lp23.com/bmextreme/After a whole lot of searching it was the only one that monitored usage for peak and offpeak periods (it also does pretty much the same things as bitmeter) but it was the peak periods i really needed to keep track of. The original download is a 2 week trial period, but after a couple of days use I went ahead and bought it... well worth it. ~B
