I have a necklace that I have worn a lot and have modified many times. Today I put it on and even though it only shows "no transfer" in inventory, I cannot modify it. I rez a copy on the ground and Take that back into inventory and that copy now shows "No Copy, No Modify" -- WTF is happening here?
I have relogged, but I am avoiding clearing cache unless I must -- it takes a while to reload 35k inventory.

Did you accidentally set it to locked? Add anything like extra prims, scripts, etc?
Rezz it and check the permissions while it's down on the ground.

It is not locked. When I rez it, the permissions still say I cannot modify it. With "Debug Permissions" turned on, I see: B: V T, O: V T (move and transfer only) And when I take the rezzed one back into inventory, I end up with one that now say No Copy, No Modify -- even though the original only says No Transfer. The thing is 102 prims that I'll need to check to see if a script or such got added somehow -- what fun. I guess it is a good thing that I really like this color of the necklace since I can no longer change it.

From: Bree Giffen Rezz it and check the permissions while it's down on the ground. I had a similar thing happen with a ring I have. It was SL doing its thing. In this case I had purchased it and contacted the designer in a panic. She recommended rezzing it on the floor and checking perms there and that worked.

Permissions in inventory and permissions when rezzed don't have to match, it's even desirable in some cases to have them be different (doesn't rule out a bug though).
If the creator set the permissions on it the wrong way you'll get that behaviour, I had the exact same issue with a prim skirt and even the replacement ended up the same way.
It took repeatedly asking her to rez her original and uncheck and recheck all the permissions and then take it back into inventory and give me the new copy to get a proper one for myself.
Rechecking the permissions in inventory won't work since that's how you get that behaviour in the first place.

From: Kitty Barnett Permissions in inventory and permissions when rezzed don't have to match I didn't realize that. I've done a lot of reading on permissions, but maybe this isn't widely known---do you know of a good discussion or article on this?

From: Ponsonby Low I didn't realize that. I've done a lot of reading on permissions, but maybe this isn't widely known---do you know of a good discussion or article on this? It's a side-effect of the fact that permissions are "baked in" when something is rezzed or taken to inventory (should have mentioned before that this only concerns prim-based items btw ) so you can for instance create a boxed freebie that acts full permission in inventory (you can hand out copies to others) but that turns "no transfer" as soon as you rez the box (leaving a seemingly full permission copy behind in inventory) to copy out the contents (which also keeps anyone from being able to resell it); or you could create a gift box that's NC/T when in inventory (it can be handed to someone else) but that contains no transfer items as an alternative to a gift vendor. While it looks like it's something that shouldn't be possible, it's the result of setting permissions for prim-based items while they're in inventory and not rezzed so the permissions don't have a chance to "bake" when they're transferred to someone else's inventory and you get a disconnect between the two. I wrote it out a bit more a few weeks back ( /8/0b/6729/3.html#post2101470) although that thread is a sticky so it's probably not a terribly good place for discussion .

Thanks for a more detailed explanation Kitty.
The thing that bugs me on this one is that I know I have modified this necklace before while wearing it. Prior to today, I only had the one copy of it.
