I read that the camera clicking sound can be disabled by ticking "quiet snapshots to disk" in the Advanced menu. But I have that checked, and I'm still hearing the sound, plus my avatar raises her hands to take a picture, and I find that very annoying. Anyone know whether this setting was borked in the latest official viewer? 1.19.1(4)

EDITED

Sorry, that was incorrect. The "quiet snapshots to disk" option only affects what happens when you choose "Snapshot To Disk" from the File menu.

Yeah, not sure you can do anything about the animation itself.

Darn. I always take snapshot to disk, but I use the Ctrl-Shift-S keyboard shortcut for that...

 Isn't that the "Snapshot" shortcut, not the "Snapshot to Disk" shortcut (which seems to be Ctrl-` on my client)? In my testing, the "Quiet Snapshot to Disk" option disables both the anim and the sound when one actually does a snapshot to disk, instead of a regular snapshot. (It's actually a little too "quiet" for my taste: it doesn't prompt for where to put it or what to name it.) Also, fwiw, there's a debug setting called "UISndSnapshot" but I suspect it only affects the local viewer and may need a client restart to take effect (too lazy to test this with an alt).

Can't find any debug setting for the animation, though. Wish these things were easier to search. Discovered that my AvatarSex is false, however, so... that explains a lot. :o

Do a manual snapshot (remove your menu options for sending it to disk) and remove the auto-save check box, discard the photo and close the snapshot window, do another snapshot and reset the auto, discard the photo and close the window. Then reset your menu items to save to disk, use the shortcut to take a photo and it will pop up the window to ask what to name it and where to put it. It will only do this the first time for each login, so I usually name mine by date and change them later. If you log out normally, it will reask this question on the first picture of each login session.

P.S. - I am giving the steps by memory, so they might be a little off. I had to figure this out once when I was taking a lot of photos and accidently got them set to save in a place I did not want them saving to.

Oh, and yes, it seems to need a couple of options under the Client/Advanced menu plus using the snapshot shortcut (the ~ key) to actually do it quietly. With all of those being used, I think even the dorky smile anim is gone.

"Quiet Snapshots to Disk" will also silence (and not show the animation) for snapshots taken with the [CTRL] + [`] shortcut.

According to this:
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2448

"Snapshot Preview tool should respect 'Quiet Snapshots to Disk'"
Fixed in 1.20.7 (87883)

Errr yeah. I use that coz it gives me all the options, whether I want the UI in or out of the picture, and so on.

This is kinda beside the point, I know, but I gotta ask. Why does this bug people? The sound lasts 2 seconds, it's a rather quiet sound, and the animation doesn't show up in the snapshot.

Yeah, that :p

Also, I tend to take loads of snapshots as I experiment with angles and lighting, and the other day my friend asked me to knock it off because the constant sound was grating on her nerves. *sigh*

Looks like I'll have to use the RC then... thanks, Winter!

Careful though ... RC10 has a bug that puts your user interface elements in the snapshot even when that option is unchecked in your prefs - so it's impossible to take clean pictures. I am sure it will be fixed in a later RC or the final release.

Is it always that way? I've noticed that, no matter how many times I uncheck it, it's always checked next time I take a snap. If I don't notice, sometimes I catch the interface (just look at my Snapzilla photos to see how often that happens). But, if I uncheck it while the popup is open, the snapshot refreshes with an interface-free photo. Problem is, if you were trying to take a timing-sensitive snapshot, you lose. Sucks.

I'm not sure what you are asking - I'm not sure what you mean by "is it always that way?" So instead of trying to answer I will just tell you what I have experienced, and you can tell me if it answers your question. :)

Before RC 9, I never took a snapshot that had the UI in it, whether it was a snapshot for direct upload or a snapshot to disk. I always had the UI in snapshots unchecked, and all my snapshots came out UI-free, as I wanted them.

After I installed RC 9, every snapshot I take has the UI in it, whether it is a snapshot for direct upload or a snapshot to disk. I have tried unchecking the option but the snapshots still have the UI in it. Whether the option rechecks itself or not I don't know - it doesn't matter, because the effect is the same (for me) whether it's checked or not. The effect being, UI in my snapshot.

The problem has persisted into RC 10. I thought there was a JIRA on it, which I thought I voted on, but now I am not certain of that.

Strange. I always use the RCs, and none of the stupid amount of photos I take has ever shown the UI.

I did have a very annoying experience once where I discovered after a particularly intensive snapping session that my hard drive contained a series of utterly black pictures. Not happened since though.

The problem with UIs in the snapshot doesn't seem to be universal. I was using RC10 today to take some pics, uploaded them to disk, and had no problems.

Meh... every time they improve one part of the viewer, they seem to break another...

I have taken many snapshots with the latest RC viewer (including a batch yesterday), with the UI box always unchecked, and the UI does not show in it. It has never behaved incorrectly for me.
