"I like an escalator because an escalator can never break, it can only become stairs. There would never be an escalator temporarily out of order sign, only an escalator temporarily stairs. Sorry for the inconvenience." Mitch Hedberg, Comedy Central Presents American comedian (1968 - 2005) Ok, I have to make this a question, to fit RA. So, why can't SL(r)(c)(tm)(WTF), be more like an escalator, and not have so much downtime? Just something light to make you all smile. It's the first think I saw when I sat down at my computer this morning.

Consider yesterday from around 1-4. Still usable, unless you needed groups and profiles. Many other downtimes are the same. It works, not fully, but it will still get you there. Sometimes, like an escalator, they need to take it fully down, too. Of course, someting like SL is a *bit* more complex than an escalator. Sometimes I'm surprised it can run at all! Mari

Sometimes SL seems like a down escalator that you are trying to walk up.

But imagine an escalator with intermittent lag - that would be cool, especially for people with vertigo!

Escalators in RL do sometimes break and get shutdown -- In Denver, July 2003: "About two dozen people were injured at Coors Field Wednesday night after a crowded escalator near the C Gate apparently malfunctioned and suddenly started to speed up, sending people crashing into one another and forcing others to tumble down" "The escalator at Coors Field collapsed, sending Rockies fans hurtling down from the field's third deck" Not sure if SL being like that escalator would really be any better - but it might be more fun to watch avis hurtling thru space rather than looking like they are trapped in time. edited to add: In this particular case, those 'stairs' flattened out, so they were no longer just stairs.

Working in Chicago I see escalators broken all the time and they don't let people use them when they are shut down you have to then find another way

I was thinking along these lines myself - though my thoughts were mainly about them catching fire which has happened also. Actually when you think about it real stairs are far preferable safety-wise than escalators. I would rather SL automatically shutdown some part or all of itself instead of corrupting or losing the things inside, then when it stopped shutting itself down, you could be sure the majority of loses and corruptions were dealt with. A rocky time at first but far easier to tell when you have got it right - ie. it runs without shutting down all the time.

I wish Second Life were more like some other part of a building.
I wish Second Life were more like a bathroom. Sometimes it's full of crap, sometimes it's all steamed up, but every time you wiggle the handle, it stops running. Every once in a while, it's closed while they mop the floors, and when it's there, you always have the chance that TP won't be there when you need it.

From: Brenda Connolly Sometimes SL seems like a down escalator that you are trying to walk up. That's trues at times. At the other times SL seems like an up escalator you are trying to walk down.
