Printable Cheat Sheets? (sort of)

Hi!

Ok, first of all, I DO NOT intend to cheat!!!

I just don't know what to call the thing I'm looking for. I would like to locate something I can print off that tells how to do things.

What comes to mind for me, is like when you are learning a program like Microsoft Word and the book comes with this little card that you can place nearby that has a list of shortcut buttons you can push to do things quicker or easier.

As you may have guessed, I'm a newbie in SL, and I have a hard time remembering how to do things and get around. I would like basic tips for things like appearance, getting around SL, etc. I am also very interested in making things, like clothing, artwork, etc., so a tip sheet would come in very handy. I'm not looking for something with lots of pictures though. A few would be ok.

If anyone can point me towards printable stuff like this, I'd be very grateful!

Take care,
Fiona

Well, cheating may be fun, given the circumstances. ;)

As for a handy sheet, SL is so huge that this would have to be a large sheet indeed. I find the knowledge base not too bad: https://secure-web8.secondlife.com/community/support.php#

It's no a handy sheet, but most areas are covered in a reasonable degree of detail. What I didn't learn through trial & error, I learned from there.

Welcome to SL! :)

Hi and welcome!

In terms of general tips, there is a great new resident information package I will pass to you inworld. It has a ton of information about a very wide range of subjects on notecards. You could copy the info and print it if you wanted to.

In terms of tips about making stuff like clothing and artwork, check the content creation forums : /294/1.html

The texturing and buildings tip forums both have sticky posts at the top with lots of information that will help with making things. If you have question left after reading those you can post them in the relevant forums.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

First, welcome to SL!

Second, you've signed your post with what appears to be your real name. You might want to change that. Most people are very protective of their RL data, for reasons which should be fairly obvious.

Third, what the others are saying is right. There are so many things you can do in SL, and you'd need a "handy reference card" for each one...and some of them would be pretty big, just all by themselves.

But there are lots and lots of guides, tutorials, and other helps. Lucrezia Lamont's newbie info kit is a good one. You can IM her, or me, for a copy. There's a handy "beginners book to SL" that's available in-world...you can see an example on display at the GQ Start campus on Zugspitze.

One book I don't recommend is the "Official Guide to Second Life" promoted on the website here. It's a fun read, but doesn't contain enough information to be worth the price.

All of the ordinary stuff...moving, flying, searching, managing your inventory, communicating, putting on or taking off clothes...will become second nature with just a few days' practice. It all feels awkward and confusing now, I know...and notecards and knowledge bases are great for Showing You How the first time or two...but you'll be surprised how fast you'll catch on.

The more specialized stuff...building, clothing design, creating an animation, scripting, land buying...are subjects in themselves. There are classes on all of them, at places like NCI and GQ Start.

Second Life is just as complex as Real Life...too much to put into a one page cheatsheet. But, like Real Life, you'll pick it up as you go.
