I run SL on Windows 7 and it runs well. Better than it did on Vista...

In general I believe it is the best OS release from Microsoft. It has some nice features, device support is pretty good and perfromance seems to be improved over Vista.

It definetly is the way to go.

dv7-3057nr -- Your Price: $599.99
Graphics Brand/ Model
This is the important part. I have no idea about that though. ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

1 thing I did notice, is in Australia a lesser model (DV7-2022TX) is $1,861.851 even though our dollars are not too different. I would buy one at your price.

Windows 7 worked beautifully for a few days, but it was overcooking the grahics card - so I'm told, to the extent that SL and some other applications were covered in bands of red and blue squares. I've heard of other people having a similar problem. For the time being I'm using a laptop with Vista and it's fine apart from slow rezzing.

The Radeon 3200 is good for entertainment and high definition video playback. It is not a very chipset for 3D rendering, especially given the driver problems people have with ATI. At that price, there is not much availalble that can run SL at decent settings. You might take a look at as a slightly more expensive alternative (but without sales tax in most states) that will run SL at high settings.

If you do go with a laptop, I would try to find an Nvidia chipset with either 9500 or higher in the old series, or 130/230 or higher, but even a GT 102 will outperform the Radeon 3200 in SL.

As far as Windows 7 is concerned, I have had no problems. It has less overhead than Vista and has been very stable for me.

I run SL on a 3 year old laptop with integrated ATI x1200 mobile and have 0 problems (even tho SL claims when I start that it might not work). The speed is not top notch, but for walking around, and chatting with people when i'm away from the desktop it works just fine. I also know people who have desktops with integrated ati 3200 and play SL just fine.

Same here, I can "run" it but if one were to purchase a new machine you want it to run SL at full tilt, graphics settings at 11 and still have room to run a browser, Gimp and Blender with 100,000 polys all at once. New machines with a "Good" graphics card can do that.

Like Veritable says, I think a high end Nvidia is the way to go.

From experience I can tell you that running anything graphically intensive like SL or Newer Games ona laptop is a recipe for disaster.

The lil' suckers can't dispel heat fast enough, nor have the horse-power of a desktop.

However, if I were to blow a load of $$$ on a gaming laptop, I would go for an Alienware 17X. Quad-core, dual Nvidia GTX 280M and 6 GB of DDR3 Memory. *me drools*

question re windows 7 upgrade
12-24-2009 13:51
A short version of my issue. I just upgraded to windows 7 because I was having an issue that appeared to be a registry problem so reinstalled the op sys and then upgraded. Windows ran fine before on Vista but now can't log in.

During the work the tech discovered the issue wasn't the op sys but a bad video card. They installed a GeForce GT220 card. Is that compatible with second life or do I need to get a different card?

CPU: AMD (FX74 X 2) (3000 MHz)
Memory: 8192 MB
OS Version: Professional (Build 7600)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 295/PCI/SSE2
Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.16.0011.9107
OpenGL Version: 3.2.0

Windows 7 is the best thing I ever did to my computer. It runs all apps and SL far better than any other OS I've ever had installed. This includes XP, Vista x64, and Ubuntu fx64. (^_^)

Though, I found that the installation did muck up my motherboard's settings. The controller that determined fan speeds had changed one of the CPU fans to get its temperature readings from a non-CPU sensor... Leading to a long run of overheats that were only explained after I found SpeedFan and changed the setting back. (>_<;)

One major tip I give about Win7... Never ever EVER expect the Microsoft graphics drivers to work. Go online and get the chip manufacturer's drivers. SL will NOT be happy until you do. (^_^)y

It's compatible, but there are a couple things you'll need to do.

First, get updated drivers from Nvidia.com.

Second, SL will probably give you a message telling you it doesn't recognize the card and will set your graphics to low. You can ignore this error, but you will need to set better quality graphics options yourself in SL's graphics preferences.

I have been using 7 since it's release. Actually, I see no real difference in performance between Vista and 7 except visually. Visually it reminds me somewhat of a mac and somewhat how mac accesses it's files. But really not much difference to me. I also never experienced the problems that many vista uses seemed to have experienced.

I do not know if I should hijack this thread or start a new one, anyway....

Can anyone point me in the direction of fixing some issues with win 7 and sl? Freezing and black screen not responding issues.

Thank you

I do not know the specifics of the situation or I would post the pc's specs.

thank you
