I was helping a newbie with thier avatar. They were having alot of problems. They gave me thier password so I could access thier AV and make changes. No way would I sign in on thier account. Just curious what problems this could cause me if I did sign in on their account?

The fact that you have their password is now automatically making you suspect in everything that might go wrong with their avatar and account.
I suggest you ask them to change their password immediately. This way lies trouble.
Not to mention that you two have broken LL's cardinal rule.

It's a breach but also its a crack in the walls surrounding their reality. It's simply forbidden.

Iona - you've done nothing wrong, the person that gave you their password did - it's against TOS. And yeah, tell them to change their password immediately !!

the person gave me their password in an IM, I did not ask for it, they just sent it to me. I have not or would never sign in on thier account. I reported the incident. Just how did I break the rules?

Remember folks, Iona did not ask for the password nor did she log on with it. The other person is the one that not only violated the TOS, but apparently is pretty clueless about the first rule of passwords in general. Give the other person this example: Hey, I'm having trouble using the ATM. Here is my pin - would you try it and see if it works okay for you. If they do not already have payment info on file, they might in the future and they have just handed someone the code to access their money.

Iona, your honesty is commendable. Also you have shared your experience here so you clearly have nothing to hide. Move on from this now and unfriend the person. Welcome to the forums, baby. Don't fret anymore.

From: Iona Ibanez Just curious what problems this could cause me if I did sign in on their account? I just realized that we have only sort of answered this question. If you did sign in, then you also would be in violation of the TOS, and as previously mentioned, you would leave a trail that could make you suspect later if her account was hacked.

From: Brenda Connolly Sharing of passwords is against the SL Terms of Service. I'm sorry but that is not true. What the TOS says is this: From: someone At the time your Account is opened, you must sellect a password. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password and are responsible for any harm resulting fr0m your disclosure, or authorizing the disclosure of, your password or from use by any person of your password to gain access to your Account or Account Name. At no time should you respond to an online request for a password other than in connection with the log-on process to the Service. Your disclosure of your password to any other person is entirely at your own risk. It is not wise to share your password, it can be risky to do so, but it is not a violation of the TOS or any "rules" that I have ever seen. Note: I had to misspell a few words to get passed the error message still plaguing this forum.

Good point, ArchTx
However, this could get turned around on you. In effect, by giving someone access to your account you could be seen as having "transferred" your avatar, since the person you gave access to can now use it. And THAT is strictly against ToS.
Point remains, exercise caution and have the password-giving person change their password to avoid any messes in the future.

I think I would just ask the person to change their password and let them know they shouldn't give that info out to anyone. I wouldn't report them for it or take it any further.

hey, good to know. thank you. i have logged onto friends accounts in tha past to halp them, or do other various things... all with their permission, or at their request, of course. i din't even think at tha time it could be against tha TOS.

It is not wise to share your password, it can be risky to do so, but it is not a violation of the TOS or any "rules" that I have ever seen. Perhaps this is a revision of the original TOS. I'm sure I must have read it. I certainly checked the box to say I had done so.

There are a lot of legitimate business reasons to share an account, some are discussed here and here, And I'd like to especially emphasize this post.

I'm sure you never check a box saying you read and agreed to a TOS without carefully studying it all. I am pretty sure that clause has not changed in ages. This topic has come up many times before in the past, as my references above point out.

This reminds me that the biggest threat to your SL security comes from your own real life surroundings.
In particular, if you leave the 'remember password' box ticked on your login screen, anyone who uses your computer can log in as 'you'. Sometimes the remember password box is checked by default when you download a viewer - I noticed this with the Emerald viewer. Or someone else could check it on your login and you don't notice it, you log in, out again and after that the other person can log you in. Also, any relations or friends who know what your SL name is can tell other people, and someone could post details on Facebook. They could also join SL and tell people about you in-world. Yes, it's against TOS, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.
It needn't even be malicious - if you have children they might just click on the desktop and discover by accident that they can log in to SL, where they could play havoc with your account or even go round telling people they're 9 in real life, not even realising they're likely to get you permanently banned.
