Yes, you can rent with a free account.

You can also "buy" land on a private estate. I put "buy" in quotes because even though it is often called that, and may even require an up front "purchase" fee, you are still really renting from the estate owner.
Well, when you get right down to it, even if you have a Premium account and buy land on the mainland, you are still renting...only you are renting direct from Linden Lab.

I think the word 'leasing' is under used in SL.

Renting is very easy. You can chose to rent land to place your own home or a ready built house. Just look in SEARCH. Most places have a simple rental box placed outside the home and you can click on it to get the rental information ie how much a week the rent is how many prims you are allowed etc and almost as important who you can contact if you need any help or more information. Then you usually have to join the group that the land is deeded too this allows you to rezz items in your own home.
Apart from that it's real easy and great fun.

Never rent for more than 906L per month per 512 meters.
Once you hit that point, a premium account is cheaper:
(I'm basing that off the quarterly rate - monthly is over priced, and annual is a bit much to expect a new person to invest in.)
********************************** 9.95 monthly 7.50 a month if quarterly 6.00 a month if annual.
For that you -get- 300L a week.
Math time: 300x52 = 15600L a year. 15600 / 12 = 1300L a month. 1300L costs roughly $5.
So the real cost to buy premium is: 4.95 monthly 3.50 if quarterly 1.00 if annual.
For that you get a 512 plot of mature land (or PG if you're into limits) and 117 prims. You get an additional 10% (51m) if you put yourself into a group of 2 or more (you and an alt) and deed your plot to your group. That will give you more prims if you merge that plot with you 512 - but that takes buying a lucky location.
The cost of that plot in lindens is therefore:
1282L / month if monthly 906L / month if quarterly 259L / month if annual
Add to this then the cost of actually buying the plot. Market conditions vary, but 2L per square meter is normal at present.
- I do not know how that compares to renting on a private sim or subletting on mainland.

I'm sure Pussycat's math is right. With renting, you pay a little for the convenience. You just pay a box to start, you pay week-by-week, so if you don't like it or get bad neighbors, POOF you're gone next week.
If you BUY land, not only do you have to learn how to buy and manage a parcel, you also will have this mental barrier to moving. Selling land is even more of a pain than buying it, imho most casual SL users end up just abandoning land they've bought when they don't want to pay tier on anymore.
If you rent, try to rent from a well-established estate owner. It's just easier - your rental is unlikely to disappear because their mother-in-law got sick, or something. .

When I wanted to sell some excess land, I just hit the sell land button and somebody had managed to buy it by the time I logged in the next morning.
All it takes is having a reasonable expectation of value - don't price it more than you yourself would be willing to pay for it if you still wanted land in that spot and didn't have any emotional attachment to it. - A quick search of land in the search land button tells you the market average and low average. Price on the low end if you want to sell fast, price on the high end if you don't care about ever selling anything.
Selling land is so trivially easy to do. If you can figure out how to log in to SL, you can figure out how to sell land. If you remember that your buyer is another real human being, you will be able to figure out how to price it.

From: Dekka Raymaker I think the word 'leasing' is under used in SL. This. Is it a JIRA by the way? I'd vote on that. Telling someone they are buying land when they are clearly NOT, is a clear way to possible fraud.

From: Pussycat Catnap - I do not know how that compares to renting on a private sim or subletting on mainland. If I did my math right, 906 per month for 117 prims would be $L 1812 a month for 234 prims ~ that's as small a land parcel as I generally go, and I'm sorta typical in that regard. 1812 a month comes out to 1812/4.333 or $L 418 a week. For reference, in the oldest regions still at pre 2006 rates, I can get as low as $L 375 a week (but you'll pry those parcels from the cold, dead fingers of people who have them). And in newer areas $L 475/week is typical. I could charge more ~ many private estates charge a flat $L 500 weekly for 234 prims, and easily get it. Is it worth the difference? That's up to everyone to decide for themselves. (For anyone even dreaming that this is somehow a desperate attempt at an ad and not genuine input, FYI, Caledon's 49 regions are solid booked. Pretend I hurled insults if you must. Do not rent from me. Go away! *sound of gate being locked*)

Telling someone they are buying land when they are clearly NOT, is a clear way to possible fraud. Then Linden Lab commits fraud on the largest possible scale, cause it says "buy land" all over SL, when its really just renting server and network resources.
