Nice to see him communicating already. I kinda expected it to take a couple months until he got situated. :)

As I start my second week, I can happily say I have a sense of what makes Linden Lab and indeed Second Life such a magical place. It's people with passion for the virtual world. And, it all starts with the Resident community. Thank you for a wondrous first week!

*shugs* to be honest it was pretty ... marketing sounding to me. Very 'hey i'm here and we are listening... well not about conserces about copy right or other legal problems but we worry about stablity.. Oh and by the way you are all cool'. I am jsut going to wait and see if he puts his money where his mouth is and improves things or shuffles the chairs around and lets philip be ceo from the board of directors.

I read it as "omg... SL is so cool! I had no idea this is what it's like!"...

I guess the "the more money you make, the less you need to know" adage holds true :p.

(Edited to add that I wouldn't expect him to magically know everything about, but at least have some idea and experience of his own)

Its a masterstroke of genius. If he is in noob camouflage, we won't be able to tell him from the other noobs short of moving the cursor over him. Its like the SL version of hiding in the hall of mirrors. :D

Hey, it makes TOTAL sense to hire a noob for the job. All the oldbies are too grouchy and negative and full of preconception...

It's the "one does not just walk into Mordor" sorta thing.

You do. You totally do! It's the only way, in fact.

Ahahah, good one. I agree - but everyone check M's av out for gold rings when you spot him!

I have to say I'm pleased he likes to refer to there being magic around the place. All worlds need a helping of magic and people who see it.

Suggestion for his Do-list:
SL is international. If only he could get LL to start using a date format that most of the rest of us non-USians won't be confused by, then that would be a Good Start. You 'Mericans will insist on doing it backwards. ;)

5/15 in his blog post for instance - yeah that's understandable, but what if it was 5/4? To a Brit at least, if not many other nationalities, that would indicate 5th of April. We think of dates as going Day/Month/Year, so 8/9 is 8th September not 9th August. Therefore it might be a good idea to include months in abbreviated letter format for offical type communications e.g. 5 May or May 5, 7 Oct etc etc.
Ok, it's a bugbear of mine and no doubt it's all been said before - but sometimes it's important to get dates absolutely clear to everyone.

Rant over... :)

Yeah that's a pain that American date format thing, it's like telling people the time is 26:5pm And I asked before the day & date be displayed next to the time, because it's damn confusing what day it is when you live 18 hours in the future. :)

when they finaly switch dates to international format hope they change time to UTC too, no more am/pm mix ups, it's only 13:37 UTC once anywhere on the globe, another advantage of UTC, no daylight saving time.

I dunno.

I read the blog wanting to narrow my eyes, but on day two, he was a walking tray of treats.

An exec at that level gleefully being a walking tray of treats somehow defeats my jaded perspective entirely.

As Aeslyn said, yes, all worlds need a helping of magic and people who see it.

Sometimes enthusiasm is enough, and at his level, he just needs that upper level view, and there is the possibility if he is a hands on guy, his brand new experience in SL will also make him notice the issues faster without knowing the workarounds.

He may wish to be a walking tray of treats again and instead find himself tp'ed naked into a garden party with a string of "attachment pending", "cannot rez object", "object not found in database" messages on his screen as a griefer attacks with self-replicating mega penises.

Until then, well I dunno, he was a walking tray of treats on his second day. I am stuck on that.

Good luck M, we are counting on you as much as the Lindens are.

He complains about his AV too much! (>_<;)

That's it! I'm sending him a loli AV and some low-rise jeans! (>_<;)

Platform stability is a key strategic priority for the company as it has been a severe pain-point for residents (especially recently).
That IS encouraging. (^_^)y

Im not about to congradulate someone just for being in a position. I will wait a couple years since all thats Ive heard is feeble repeats. Great to see he has a firm grasp of what its like after a week <smirks>

M, just drop the pom-poms and go to work.

CEO is not a noob
05-28-2008 17:48
The new CEO is not new to Second Life. See the farewell note to his old company he referred to on the blog post: http://threeminds.organic.com/2008/05/already_caught_sleeping_on_the.html (sorry, I don't know how to post a link) where he writes:

"I wrote about Second Life in Click Z in 2006 and created my first avatar more than a year ago. Around the same time, I invited the dynamic Founder, Philip Rosedale, to speak at an Organic management meeting. He was a hit. He has a fantastic mind and a magical vision for Second Life. Last month, I read Philip was recruiting a CEO so I wrote him a note asking him what he was up to. We had dinner and the rest is history. Or will be, hopefully. I am deeply honored to be joining the Linden family.

Come visit me in-world. My avatar is M Linden. I start May 15th."

Speakin of griefers, somebody up in the upper right-hand corner of that screen shot sure looked "familiar"... I guess they really are that bored. Hell they must like SL even more than us, anyway...

I think it's too early to really say anything bad about how the new CEO is handlin' his job...he's goin into week 2 of "orientation". I would rather see him start w/ enough knowledge to do his job, than to rush. Rushing visible changes has almost become a "trademark" for LL. This is the LAST one they should rush.

I hope he sees the potential for the platform, enough to see huge dollar signs down the road for havin' a big role in pioneering whatever they are gonna call the standard for these metaverses/worlds/MMOs in the future. That would be enough to make an exec in his position take the job seriously enough to really care about the future of the community as customers, the product, and stability to facilitate growth.

...yeah I been readin dictionary.com.
