Hiya all, First of all I just want to say that I think the people on these forums are wonderful in the fact that they actually take the time to try and help those of us who haven't a clue about a lot of the aspects of SL and it's great to have a place to go to get our questions answered. I've been looking through a lot of posts, and noticed that there are a great many residents who complain about the fact that there's never a Linden around when you need one etc. I went to a discussion last night held by Prospero Linden, where the general topic was tecchie issues, computers, graphics, setup etc. I actually arrived there 15 mins beforehand because I thought that the place would be swamped with people. In total there were about 5 av's, which really surprised me. Prospero answered every one of my questions, and myself being a rather unknowledgeable resident about technical matters, was asking some pretty basic questions. I found this discussion event of trememdous help and left feeling that I'd really learned so much more about the whole set-up regarding computers and specs. There were a few new residents there also, and eventhough the discussion was supposed to be a technical one, he had no problem in helping a new resident with prim hair attachment. Anyway, I'm just curious to know why there weren't more people there, especially the ones who constantly complain about the lack of in-world Linden contact.... Here was a great opportunity to speak to a Linden, ask questions etc and there were only 5 people there!!!

Hi! I'm guessing this was an Office Hours meeting? I for one can never make it to those because of the time-difference, but I know lots of people who do attend various Linden Office Hours and THMs. However, I think some Linden's office hours are more popular than others. Perhaps because of the Linden in question being more popular, or more well known? Or because of the subject matter posted? I think it's great they have office hours btw, my next wish would be for transcripts of both office hours and THMs to be easily traceable. Good for you for going!

There are plenty of office hours and some attract big crowds, Robin's for example, whereas others attract small numbers.
They could help attract more people to office hours by stating the nature of the office hour and previous minutes so that people can decide whether that's the right meeting to go to.
The reason people complain about not being able to talk to a Linden is that they want to talk to one there and then I guess. From what I can tell, in the early days it was easy to find and approach a Linden.

Hiya , Yes it was an office hours meeting.....and I've got to say that it was very informative. I understand that not everyone can attend these meetings because of schedule conflicts etc. and of course the time zone issue. I'm a night-owl anyway so I'm usually up till all hours of the morning. My reason for going was to clarify the 'ideal' computer setup, if there even is one....lol.. When he asked me what processor I had, I had to admit that I hadn't a clue but he told me where to find out etc.... and gave me a great little titbit of info about the graphics card, mine being a mere 64K...boo hoo. He suggested that I lower the setting on 'adv graphics' to 32 and things run a bit smoother at the moment. Made me feel a whole lot better about my ancient computer who's been working overtime for me since I joined SL...

hmm, I didn't know it was happening... Where was it posted?
I don't usually pay attention to event listings, I scan through the forums but only read some areas and only read posts that catch my attention...
I read the blog when it sent to my email, otherwise I don't pay attention...
I do read the MOTD but usually forget what it said shortly after
Wish there was better ways to inform people of such events, maybe a grid wide announcement would be nice?

The reason people complain about not being able to talk to a Linden is that they want to talk to one there and then I guess. From what I can tell, in the early days it was easy to find and approach a Linden. Yes, waaaayyy back when, it was far easier to approach a Linden. I'd see various Lindens popping in and out of sandboxes and welcome areas. They'd wander around, chatting with various residents just because they could! I mean, I'd see Blue in the Welcome Area, being bombarded for bears! And I'm not so sure it's that they are complaining that they 'physically' need one then and there.. but more like they need a communication line that works 'then and there.' It more that there are very few cases where we need a Linden.. and when we do, it's usually worst case and feel we need one then and there. Support tickets can go unanswered for days on end, even for the most debilitating 'bug,' so they complain. (This is at least my mentality on the need a Linden, 'then and there.') Whenever possible, I try to join in on focus group meetings and I'm eventually going to go to some office hours. It's just too hard to juggle right now.

Wish there was better ways to inform people of such events, maybe a grid wide announcement would be nice? Well, I was just scanning through the events listing in the search window, and there it was.....I was a little surprised to find that a Linden was hosting it, as I'd previously thought that they were an almost extinct species... And I do agree with your other point, I think that a gridwide announcement would be a great idea....especially when it's a Linden hosted event.....I'm sure that there are a lot of residents that would appreciate being able to speak with an 'insider' so to speak. I ususally make it a point to scan the events, especially under the 'education' and 'discussion' catagories, and i'll check the 'notify' button if it's an event that I have a particular interest in....so even if I'm not able to attend, I'll still get a notification and decide whether or not to go. And I also sympathise with the fact that there is a lot of 'schedule juggling' that has to happen, Having one busy life is a lot of work, but when you have two, it's sometimes near impossible. I suppose that everyone's experiences with trying to communicate with the Lindens is different, and I also suppose that mine have been great so far, in the fact that my support tickets have always been responded to rather quickly etc.. I've also relied a lot on the forums recently, great for finding answers and most posters are only too willing to answer the 'simplest' of questions, which is a great resource to have available to oneself.

I saw a product yesterday that's advertised as a "Linden Radar"...a device that will give you a list of the Lindens currently in-world at any given time.
I've never actually NEEDED a Linden, so I probably won't get this. But for anyone who's ever said, "where's a Linden now that I need one?" this thing might be a useful item.

I think the issue isn't dat you can't go to office hours an see them, it's the lack of support when you need it, say in an emergency situation. Mari

I have never seen a Linden.
A search in events, category "All" for "Linden" gives me the dreaded: "None found."

Here was a great opportunity to speak to a Linden, ask questions etc and there were only 5 people there!!! Mostly because I have to work in RL for a living and LL office hours are really more convenient to people in Europe than the US. Would I like to go to more? You bet! Do I want to burn big chunks of vacation doing it? Not so much...

From: White Hyacinth A search in events, category "All" for "Linden" gives me the dreaded: "None found." I could be wrong, but my experience with Search Events is that results are based on the first letters or word in the event name, rather than keywords - like groups used to be. So searching for "Linden" would miss "Prospero Linden office hours," "Office hours - Prospero Linden," "Town Hall Meeting," and lots of other possibilities. I remember when group searches changed from first word to keyword, but event listings don't seem to have made it over yet. (That, sadly, is why I always list our club's events beginning with the name of the club.) Nic

I'm bummed that I'm in the same time zone as LL, so my work hours are their work hours. I can't login from work (DOH, what am I, supposed to be working??) so have only been to an office hours when dreadfully ill and staying at home.

The Quest for A Linden

Nic I wasn't actually searching for 'Linden'. I usually just browse the events, and on this particular occasion, whilst scrolling through the 'discussion' listings, stumbled across this particular one..with Prospero. As for the whole time zone thing, I totally sympathise with everyone who finds the differences inconvenient.... maybe the fact that living in the European time zone and being able to attend these verious Linden office hour meetings make up for the fact that we, well.....em......well you know what I'm talking about
