My friend yesterday bought some land which he then tried to deed to our group. The first time he tried he got told there were not enough land credits -I thought land credits were only an issue if you're buying land on behalf of a group and not deeding it.

Eventually after breaking little bits off he was able to deed, but somewhere along the line LL has seen fit to increase his tier. Before he deeded anything he was still within his current tier limit and all he did was give land to the group. (And forgive my logic but giving stuff away cannot leave you with more than you started).

This has also happened with someone else who deeded their 512sq m plot, only to find they'd gone up a tier level when they had. Has this ever happened to anyone else and if so what happened? and did you find out why?

If I understand what happened correctly your friend missed a step.

On the About land box right near where you check Deed to group is also a little thing you can check off that says owner makes contribution (or something like that). This donates the tier as well as the land. If you check that as well as the deed to group it doesn't bump up your tier.

The "not enough land credits" will have meant the group - he tried to deed the land without tier and the group didn't have anough tier for it. Cuttiing the bits off probably cut the size of the land down to the point where the group did have enough spare tier for it. I thought that the message about the group not having sufficient spare tier came after land was deeded rather than during, but I'm probably mistaken.

I've no idea how he could have gone up a tier level unless he went out and bought more land after deeding some, thinking that, as he's given some away, he can buy more to replace it.

Maybe during the cutting bits off, etc. he bought back some of the land from the group?
If he didn't have enough tier left (after donations to group), he would jump up a tier level.

The tier that would set the level would be Land Owned (by himself) + Any Donations
