...and it's not a soap opera affair or paedogeddon.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/highlands_and_islands/8159755.stm

"The MyGlengarry.com Conservation Trust has "built" two versions of the castle (Invergarry), near Fort Augustus, on Second Life."

I'll see if I can find a SLURL next time I'm in-world.

May not be useful:

The 3D "innovations centre" on the Second Life site cost £20,000 to set up and £12,000 a year to run even though it is not accessible to the public.

I'm not sure that is where the castle build is. I think that's referring back to an older story about wasted government money. Checking it out now...

Warning, the place is annoyingly full of hard-sell spam for the RL project.

Whcih led me to this bit of insight from a commentator,
"I always wonder how many people who write stories on Second Life actually have used the program before. The last time I tried, I found the connection to be very unstable, and most of the world filled with spam. There are numerous pornography dens and online gambling. The bulk of the users are either idle in the world or more content in virtually dancing with a man/werewolf hybrid. And does the virtual world itself even add to the event? I don't think I'm more inclined to listen to an event just cause I right-clicked a virtual chair and chose sit. What makes that any different than an online conference call?

I think companies initially seized upon Second Life as a way to tap into the "future of communications" much like they have with Twitter, but back to my previous comments, I think they are headed down a dead end."

Having danced with "man/werewolf hybrid on prior ocassions, I cannot see this gentleman's objection- maybe he should try dancing with lady/werewolf hybrids...

And of course... as many years as SL has already been around- it is certainly heading down a dead end. Hah! And he wondes how many have actually played- when was the last time he tried it if gambling was still around- goodnes know there is no gambling ever in other famous convention cities - cause of course, business conventions are well know to be about nothing BUT business -

it reads like

a) it's been at least two years ago when he tried it, probably more (yes, than gambling, plus it sounds like the connection issues of pre '07)

and

b) he didn't actually have enough imagination to get out and explore

(then again, a commentator doesn't need an imagination...)

I nicked it from the Chris Morris 'Brass Eye' episode on the subject.

I might agree with him on this one. Who needs "companies" in SL? We're here for the company - so to speak.

I took his meaning to be he was forecasting the end of SL not so much its involvement with companies- but maybe he did mean business wise- as long as they leave OUR sL alone!!
