What earthly (or otherwise) good do those vote boxes do anyway? I've seen them around my entire 2 and half years as a resident and never bothered to ask what they do if anything.
Whatever it is, it seems obsolete now. _____________________

Popularity vote for search? They're gaming the search engine?
I remember seeing the vote boxes when I fist came to SL in '04 I seem to recall asking and being told that you can vote for places you like and SL would give more stipend. _____________________

Whatever it is, it seems obsolete now. They are obsolete now but at one time apparently you could earn lindens based on how many votes you received. It eventually evolved into what we know as traffic/dwell http://secondlife.wikia.com/wiki/Voting_Stations _____________________

all they are good for now is people in clubs spamming you to click on them, because they don't realize they don't do anything.

The code is still there somewhere counting those votes too. Some day SL is going to have one of its burps and pay out years of back stipend.
I can't wait for the forum posts when it happens either . lol _____________________

Odd one i have voted on took me to a web site that showed a list of clubs in SL and were the one i voted for was at I like the idea. dwell is not traffic. 1 Avatar = 1 dwell Traffic = where that avatar has been Dwell is not traffic. The formula for a parcel's traffic* (edit) looks something like this.... Subject: Re: Need the math proof for 1 + 1 = 2 The proof starts from the Peano Postulates, which define the natural numbers N. N is the smallest set satisfying these postulates: P1. 1 is in N. P2. If x is in N, then its "successor" x' is in N. P3. There is no x such that x' = 1. P4. If x isn't 1, then there is a y in N such that y' = x. P5. If S is a subset of N, 1 is in S, and the implication (x in S => x' in S) holds, then S = N. Then you have to define addition recursively: Def: Let a and b be in N. If b = 1, then define a + b = a' (using P1 and P2). If b isn't 1, then let c' = b, with c in N (using P4), and define a + b = (a + c)'. Then you have to define 2: Def: 2 = 1' 2 is in N by P1, P2, and the definition of 2. Theorem: 1 + 1 = 2 Proof: Use the first part of the definition of + with a = b = 1. Then 1 + 1 = 1' = 2 Q.E.D. Note: There is an alternate formulation of the Peano Postulates which replaces 1 with 0 in P1, P3, P4, and P5. Then you have to change the definition of addition to this: Def: Let a and b be in N. If b = 0, then define a + b = a. If b isn't 0, then let c' = b, with c in N, and define a + b = (a + c)'. You also have to define 1 = 0', and 2 = 1'. Then the proof of the Theorem above is a little different: Proof: Use the second part of the definition of + first: 1 + 1 = (1 + 0)' Now use the first part of the definition of + on the sum in parentheses: 1 + 1 = (1)' = 1' = 2 Q.E.D. - Doctor Rob, The Math Forum http://mathforum.org/dr.math/ _____________________

Dwell is not traffic. Traffic is based on dwell. Your dwell plus my dwell on this thread = .0012 traffic for said thread. _____________________

im talking about dwell and rl $ vs traffic rating in search.
dwell is vastly different than traffic. i dont understand the relevance of a mathematical formula. _____________________

Nina Stepford]im talking about dwell and rl $ vs traffic rating in search. dwell is vastly different than traffic. i dont understand the relevance of a mathematical formula. OHHH....OK we talking Apples and Oranges..... here we go.... SL definitions: DWELL (n.) Payment of allowance based on traffic. TRAFFIC (v.) Percentage of total Dwell (v.) spent at a particular location. DWELL (v.) Spending ones time at a location. ie.~ He's dwelling at the surf beach. Older residents use the term stipend in place of the noun dwell sometimes because it makes more sense than LL's newer termonology. To top it off they renamed the old "traffic" to "dwell." If that's not confusing enough read on. Your avatar has one (1 L$) dwell point to spend in any 24 hour period you're signed in. Whenever you are at a location for more than 5 or 10 minutes a portion of your dwell goes toward that land's traffic. If you are at location A for 45 minutes and location B for 15 minutes then A gets .75 traffic and location B .25 traffic. CRAP let me find the dwell/traffic in the WIKI.....http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Talk:About_Traffic No need to go there here it is... Requests For Vetting] Post-Stipend Realities I've done some re-rigging of the article to reflect the current post-stipends reality that we live in. Could I get someone to look over the edits just in case I FUBARed some of the details? Thanks in advance! --Patchouli Woollahra 23:39, 20 January 2007 (PST) Please stop editting this page and replacing everything with nonsense about complex formulas just because some stupid Linden told you some BS about how traffic works. Conduct your own experiments and present the methodology and results if you disagree with what is written here. We absolutely cannot rely on the word of devs or other random Linden Lab employees on this topic and MUST resort to simple experiments. - Elanthius Flagstaff * Personally, I disagree on both the content and the tones of your comment. I think word of devs or other random Linden Lab employees on this topic is absolutely relevant --oobscure 13:04, 31 March 2009 (UTC) ~~~~Yes in the WIKI too~Rafe~~~~ Removed section I removed this section because it does not describe traffic as actually measured. -- Argent Stonecutter 14:25, 10 May 2009 (UTC) The current traffic algorithm In May 2008, Linden Lab provided a description of the traffic algorithm, which they assure is still current: How ‘traffic’ works: * Every user gets 1 point of dwell to give out during the 24 hours between midnight and midnight. Any parcel of land that the Resident spends more than 5 sequential minutes on gets counted as a place that they spent time. * Parcels owned by the Resident (or group) are counted as if they were the same parcel. The user's 1 point is then evenly divided between those parcels. * So, I if was online for 1 hour and spent 20 minutes on Resident A's parcel and 40 minutes on Resident B's parcel, Resident A would get 0.333 from me and Resident B would get 0.666 from me. * Alternately, if I only spent 5 minutes online and spent all of it on resident A's land, she would receive 1 point from me. Those raw point totals are what is reported in the find window. Traffic does not take into account the length of time someone spends on a parcel, but rather is based on the proportion of their inworld time spent there. As you can see, the traffic measurement is confusing to understand and doesn’t necessarily result in useful statistics for Residents, which is another reason why the Popular Places tab is being replaced with the Showcase. (Source, LewisPR on behalf of Linden Lab, 16 May 200 ![]() How the algorithm evolved into its current form The original idea was to reward builds of ‘good’ content. We first tried to detect "good" via Voting Stations -- green pillars placed in-world on which a user could click to indicate a parcel was "good". Only one vote per day per user per parcel was allowed. We would then tally up the votes nightly and distribute L$. This didn't work well because users would gang up, fly around to all their friends' parcels and click the voting stations. Or they created vote farms - collections of 16m² parcels each owned by a different person each with its own vote box, to make voting for friends easier. So we decided to replace it. Dwell (subsequently renamed to ‘traffic’) was an attempt to limit how many "votes" a single user could provide in a day. The idea was to give each user one "aggregate vote" per day, and divide that contribution up among all parcels that user visited. Visits under 5 minutes were discarded as "just passing through". (Source, LewisPR on behalf of Linden Lab, 16 May 200 *notice the comments about the voting boxes ![]() Math and more math has to do with it ![]() You are being paid a"stipend/Dwell (n)." You are being paid for your "dwell (v.)." That dwell is based on your land's "traffic (n.)." Or simply... Traffic is based on dwell. Your dwell plus my dwell on this thread = .0012 traffic for said thread. Now you have been here long enough to have heard this all before; lol, R U messing with me??? lol _____________________

mate, 'dwell' paid $usd, traffic pays search ranking and thats a stretch. they are clearly two separate things and unrelated to stipends. elsewhere, you have suggested you are be old enough to remember monthly usd dwell dividends. clearly you are not.

According to his profile he is old enough to remember (it says his original account was from 2004). Maybe he is having a senior moment. ![]() I have A-LOT of those. To tell the truth I owned land back then and when the policy change came the confusion started. Both mine and others. One time I read my account as loosing money because I switched over to group land. I even posted it in forums. I had 1/4 SIM for awhile at first, with visitor counting scripts I knew exactly how many people were visiting and how long the were within range of the scripts. I never calced it out, but the numbers looked close to what I'm saying. It was easy to keep track too because we were right on the corner of the grid. I posted when that changed too because when the newer SIMs were added I had to ask a Linden to come fix the new boundaries. B4 the change only 2 SIMs bordered ours and until we started events the traffic was low._____________________

Some seem to add the place to a web site out side of SL. A popularity contest not based on search in SL Originally the third-party one even had the LL logo on top like the official one but I heard they had to change that when LL brought in the trademark and copyright protection rules concerning their brand. So to recap, the official LL ones with the SL logo do absolutely nothing, people do indeed still have them because they have no clue they don't do anything - it is quite bizarre that people will spend the prims without knowing for certain a gadget works. The other type do (or used to - not sure if they are still running even) update a web site with location placings based upon these votes. There is at least one other third-party type too that does something similar but looks nothing like the LL version. Hope this helps VV_____________________

all they are good for now is people in clubs spamming you to click on them, because they don't realize they don't do anything. Not correct... Many of them are used for this: http://www.slpopularplaces.com/votingbooth.php They look like the original SL ones, but they are not... Gomez _____________________
