I have searched and read all manner of threads and the wiki repeatedly for a week or so on deeding to group.I have never needed to do this but I am out of prims.
I have a group.
My plot is 8192 and tier is L$40 + dreaded vat(that's all I want to pay)
I still can use my 512 freebie.
There is 1280 available in my sim.I work it out that if I deed the lot to group I can buy this land and not incur a tier increase. Point is am I right?

8192 + 512 = 8704 m allowable under your tier level
Donating your 8192tier to the group along with deeding the land, and then adding the unused 512 would allow the group to own 8704 + 10% = 9574 (rounded down)

In effect 'you' (via thegroup) can buy an additional 1382m over the 8192.

Just be very careful to set autoreturn to 0 until you have set your objects to group. Don't deed the objects.

the objects belong to the group, not to yourself anymore, to get them back you have to buy them back, it's a pain in the ass!

You almost never want to deed stuff to group, just set it to group. The problem with deeding is that the group really becomes the "next owner"--it's a real asset transfer--and that's almost never what you want. For example, if you deed to group a prim you made yourself without changing the next owner permissions to full perm, any omitted permissions are lost forever, no matter who created it.

The few exceptions are for scripted objects that do very special things requiring ownership by the parcel owner. When the group owns the land, those things need to be owned by (deeded to) the group, too, in order to work correctly. Some things like that: land radios and TVs that adjust parcel audio or media streams by script; parcel prim counters; most security systems. Probably other stuff I'm forgetting at the moment, but not very many things should ever be deeded to group.

Also, be sure to have your group active and "Buy For Group" otherwise you'll buy it personally while all your tier is donated and accidentally raise your monthly bill.
