Can anyone point me towards a post that shows the consequences for excessive chat spam? Something that specifically addresses chat spam not just harassment. Oh and a response by a Linden would be awesome. Yes I know I dont ask a lot.

This seems to be the most likely answer:

From: http://secondlife.com/corporate/tos.php
You agree to read and comply with the Community Standards posted on the Websites. In addition to abiding at all times by the Community Standards, you agree that you shall not:(...)(x) "stalk", abuse or attempt to abuse, or otherwise harass another user. Any violation by you of the terms of the foregoing sentence may result in immediate and permanent suspension or cancellation of your Account. You agree that Linden Lab may take whatever steps it deems necessary to abridge, or prevent behavior of any sort on the Service in its sole discretion, without notice to you.

I read this to be as a judgement call of the person being abused, and that LR reserves the right to act on it.

And the smiley system eating a diaeresis makes me wonder if there's a way to explicitly tell the forum not to turn something into a smiley, bonus points if there's a way to set things so the forum never converts text I post to smiley form...

Good luck on getting a specific answer on this, as a lot of the GTeam seems to work on a case by case basis. Chat spam could fall under harassment, intolerance (assuming an intolerant message), indecency (adult/vulgar message), or even disclosure. It is likely mostly under "disturbing the piece" described in the community standards as follows:

"Every Resident has a right to live their Second Life. Disrupting scheduled events, repeated transmission of undesired advertising content, the use of repetitive sounds, following or self-spawning items, or other objects that intentionally slow server performance or inhibit another Resident's ability to enjoy Second Life are examples of Disturbing the Peace."

There does not, however, seem to be anything that specifically says "chat spam," or gives a specific "this is what will happen" other than the standard boilerplate, also from the community standards:

"Second Life is a complex society, and it can take some time for new Residents to gain a full understanding of local customs and mores. Generally, violations of the Community Standards will first result in a Warning, followed by Suspension and eventual Banishment from Second Life. In-World Representatives, called Liaisons, may occasionally address disciplinary problems with a temporary removal from Second Life."

Go into enhanced mode and click the "Disable smilies in text" button.
