Looking for RP possibilities

I am contemplating doing some role play. I may or may not use an alt. I will of course look around myself, but suggestions are welcomed.
Here's a list of criteria:

I don't want a pure fantasy sim, a dark fantasy/horror sim, or a
dark urban pimp/ho/drugdealer/gangbanger thing.

I'm not a good candidate for the TV based sf sims, because I'm not a big fan of any of those

I want the option of having a non-combat role

Not Gor

Yesterday I stopped by the "Scottland/Highland" sim.

/me sighs heavily

A guy in a great kilt - with no shirt - talking to a lady in an - mmm I'd say 18th century upper class gown from the size/shape of the skirts - told me that they were at war with Rome and had a Queen.
I politely told them I was too much of a history buff for them, and to have fun.

Steampunk and Old West are possibilities.

Any thoughts?

Do a search for RP, role play, roleplay, or other keyword like Egypt, Victorian, Steampunk, etc. to see what comes up. Then tp around to various sims and find out what you like.

Please don't dismiss a genre out of hand because you may have preconceived notions about the sim...spend some time observing before making a decision. Many will TP in for a few minutes and decide bah...this sim sucks...if they had stayed longer or came several times they might see something they wanted to get involved in. The stories and the players change all the time so the essence changes from moment to moment in RP sims.

Also, while you may need to wear a combat meter, not everyone in a combat sim is involved in combat, but that doesn't mean your character won't get damaged or die, just means you do not have to intentionally make your character a combat character.

There are multiple historical sims/RP around, but do not expect them to recreate history as you know it; otherwise, you will be sorely disappointed. From my experience, few people take the time to do any research to really do a good historical RP character and/or setting. but most do try. Most historical RP sims that I have been to explore alternate history, which can be terribly fun.

Having had an RP area for awhile, please understand that we do the best we can and try to accommodate as many people as we can for various RP. Most RP areas are open because we enjoy seeing other people have fun....and maybe with a few exceptions...we don't make money off them nor do the small amount of donations some players may make even come close to covering tier costs. Actually, opening up an RP sim to the general populous is a major pain in the butt. I applaud all the RP sim owners out there for your guts and bravery to keep them going.

Few Hints when checking out an RP Sim:
-Refrain from trying to RP when visiting RP sims unless you are a member of that RP sim.
-Refrain from trying to speak OOC in RP sims. If you have questions, ask them politely in IMs to avoid disrupting RP. If they do not answer right away, assume they are either away or involved in something else and not ignoring you.
-Read their policy and/or background note card and abide by their rules.

I wish you the best of luck and am sure you will find something that suits your desires.

Tomestone comes to mind. American old west. I was only there once but I like the look and feel of the place and at the time it was reasonibly populated; as in enough people there to find someone to talk to and not so many that it lagged all to hell.

It has been some time so I don't know what it may be like now, nor do I know if what I saw was typical. Still ... it might be worth checking out.

I have found one - Deadwood. Trying to create an historically accurate gold rush town. I hope to be the schoolmarm. :)

Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm coming a little late to this thread but you might also consider the new off-canon roleplay sim Gianfar Peaks, based (loosely) on the Dragons of Pern novels by Ann McCaffrey. It's not due to open properly until sometime in mid September but it's already very promising. There are six sims to explore and some stunning builds taking shape.

Was Deadwood the one that had a saloon with a picture of Toby Keith on the wall? If so, I thought it was a nice build, but the WTF factor went through the roof in the saloon. There were also line dance balls.

HBO's Deadwood might be the greatest tv series EVER. I'll physically threaten the life of anyone who says differently. OK, I'm kidding about the threat, but the series was fantastic.

I want to go RP in Deadwood so I can be Al Swearingen. Only without gleets.

Edit: IMO RP is about the people playing, not the actual theme. It has to be a fun theme, of course, but the quality of the people involved makes a HUGE difference.

we have a few light RP'ers at Laputa but i would suggest Rivet town, 3 sims owned and run by Grace louden, one of SL's best builders and role player in my opinion. that place will be huge soon. i believe they have something on around 7PM today i'm hopeing to make it in (hideing obviously because fur's arn't aloud :( )

it's basically high class vs. low class and there just starting now so it would be a good idea to get in on the ground floor. mayor elections are starting soon as well i hear

That's what I meant. Didn't they call them "gleets" or something like that? That looked pretty horrible. That series also had one of the worst fight scenes ever - when Dan killed that guy who was working for...I forget his name. The San Francisco miner. It's a famous name, too. lol, I can't place it. But if you know the series, you know the scene I'm talking about. Tore his eyeball right out of his head then skulled him with a piece of timber. Just awful.

lol - as much as I love to trick people into googling something truly horrid, that time, I really wasn't trying. I just used the word they used in the tv series.

i was under the impression it had something to do with the writers strike you guys had going on over in the states that stopped the next season.

also heard there was one last season and a tele-movie on the way. of course you can't always believe what you hear...perhaps i should google that too :P

I don't know about Carnivale, but Deadwood wasn't, I believe, related to the writer's strike. HBO has a habit of pulling the plug one season too soon on its series like that. Another season of Rome would have been nice, too. They always leave you wanting more. Bastards. Deadwood was the worst for me. I wanted one more season soooo badly. I was like a whiny little kid who can't have what he wants.

Wouldn't be Deadwood Trout. They are *very* authentic. There's some living history folks in there, including the mayor, I understand. Won't be events with cowgirls in tight jeans, either.

My mistake then. I must have it mixed up with some other Western RP sim. I remember it was an old west mining town. I just don't remember the name. It was a pretty decent build until I got to the saloon, then it was just ridiculous.

There's two or three other ones out there. They frequently have country music events in their saloons.
