Anyone else dislike the new fake avatar drawing feature in the v1.19.1.0 RC viewer?

I mean I like the idea and the speed increase is noticably better :)
However the distance at which the effect starts is too near the avatar I feel and the fake avatar just looks all blocky and not very real - I feel they could have done a little better myself.
One of my friends commented that they look like old video game characters.

Perhaps it is just me :(

It looks like crap.

It's terrible looking.

It's optional, though.

The new viewer is much slower on my system, so I have been motivated to try the imposter feature.

If SL has to look like that to be fast enough I would rather find something else to do.

I could use a new video card and more memory, or get a new system and demote my better computer to surfing and put the current surfing computer in the kitchen or living room.

I don't know that the impostors look the same on all systems. On mine they are very jaggy, totally discordant against the rest of SL.

I didn't realise it was optional - it came switched on by default. ahh I found it lurking under Preferences->Graphics->Custom->Avatar Rendering. Perfectly obvious lol.

I pretty much agree with Suzanne on that. I keep it turned off except in the laggiest of crowded places.

For those with the problem of lag in crowded places - in addition to setting the draw distance to 64, which may not be far enough to suit you for general usage, but is usually ok for crowded events, especially if they are indoors, you can also use a setting that limits the number of avatars displayed.

It's in the Client / Debug Settings, called RenderAvatarMaxVisible.

It's kind of sad to have to make SL not display all the avatars in order to work at an acceptable speed.

You can also adjust the distance at which the impostors take over by moving the Avatar Detail slider. More detail = the impostors don't appear until you are farther away. If you set it appropriately, the effect of the impostors is unobtrusive; they don't take over until the level of detail of the avatar is low anyway.

If you want to experiment, first choose the basic quality level you want, then check Custom and adjust the avatar detail slider until you like the results. And if you never like them, you can just turn impostors off.

The best part is it's optional as you say.

I had said I don't download anything new unless it's a must due to the history of things that tend to go wrong when you do. With this said, why does anyone download this viewer or anything else for that matter? Time after time you see the many things that go and have gone wrong not only this time around but each and every time. Yet, some of you still haven't learned.

I understand technology advances and you need to move forward but the stuff we're talking about is just scenery for the most part. There's nothing on there that you can't do without.

Keep on doing it and keep on having problems.

I use the regular viewer, plus the new release candidate, and the beta grid candidate, and I have Nicholaz's client, and Dale Glass's. I have First Look but I think that's been folded into the RC 1.19.1.

Umm, I also have the Dazzled client and some other one I can't remember long enough to type.

There's another I need to get, it's the "Cool Viewer", or something like that.

You can try the release candidate and if you like it, good, use it, if you don't, ignore it or uninstall it.

For some it's fun to try new stuff. Lord knows the prims are starting to all look alike by now.

Suezanne, try the Onrez viewer. I am pretty much in lust with that one because it runs like a charm on my machine and because the interface is much better than in the usual client. (Just IMO, of course.)

OnRez. Slaps forehead. That's the one I couldn't remember.

Ahh, here's links to another viewer: http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog/

Guess I have an issue with 3rd-party clients, I'm afraid - just a personal trust thing - would rather do my best to make the "official" one work....

The avatar imposter thing is cool, but on my config it was set too close, but that was an easy adjustment. Anything that helps in the lagfests that are stores during sales :)

I know what you mean. If set to close distance Avatar Impostors lit makes me think someone was smoking crack and watching CodeMonkeys when they came up with this feature. Lucky for us you can change the view distance or disable it entirely.
