What are the rules of this 'POLL' game on the forum?

It’s this game of ‘poll’ that a lot of people play, it looks fun but I don’t know how seriously people take it so I made one up to find out. Will you answer it? Or maybe not. I usually don’t read any threads with polls in, maybe you don’t either.
We had this family reunion yesterday and I asked them and Dad went all grumpy and started talking about scientific method yawn and Uncle Hal said he liked asking questions about sex and drugs I suppose he’ll do rock n roll next, but it didn’t matter if people gave irrelevant answers and my mother said they were both well past it but would we all mind talking more quietly or preferably not at all as she’d had a rough day on the stock market or maybe it was the dentist I always get them mixed up.
By the way you remember that guy who wanted to do a research on me? I met him and he asked a lot of questions about how my SL identity matched my RL identity and then he started getting all flustered and crashed a lot. I was really sorry for him he was a sweet guy and didn’t make any comments about my ass the way a lot of them do and I wasn’t helping his thesis much. (Not that I would have minded if he had if he was a bit sophisticated about it. Well, you know). He said I ought to visit RL and I said he ought to get a decent skin I mean it was REALLY basic and he said I know rather miserably. So I said well why don’t you forget about your boring topic and choose a different topic which is how SL subverts traditional concepts of identity so that his interviews would still be useful? And he went all quiet and said tell me more and I said he ought to tell me about his research project first he’s writing it not me and then I didn’t hear from him after that. I hope he finishes it must be pretty bad doing a research here. That’s why we need some real factual data like in my poll.
Have there ever been any good polls that worked? Why do people really put them in? Is it just a joke?
(PS to avoid disappointment, sorry this isn’t a set up for a really complicated joke, wish it was. I did some nice ones in another thread though :))

As of this post the "poll" is indicating that "poll" results are "generally invalid", but if "poll" results are actually "generally invalid" does this mean that the results of this "poll' are ...........................

Oh, nevermind, this is making my head hurt. :)

I work out the results this way.

The people who gave an answer saying that they do not give an answer can be ignored.
The people who gave an answer without reading the thread should be ignored.

Then 70%, the majority, consider that the answers are not valid.
But 30% consider the majority answer is valid, so they ought to be added to the majority.

That gives 100% saying that the majority answer is invalid, so ought to be rejected.

I think that is unanimous approval for the result.
I feel a lot more reassured in the Polls now. Thanks.
