It is also possible to unlink individual parts without unlinking the entire set.
When editing an object, check the box to Edit Linked Parts (or something like that). Then deselect the item and select just the prim or prims you want to unlink. Then the Unlink command will only take those prims out of the set.
I have found that if I just unlink one prim, it remains selected. But if I unlink two or more at the same time, the entire object becomes selected. If you want to work just on the unlinked prim(s), you need to make sure they are the only ones selected then.
