I have different face animations, both free and bought. There's some pretty smiles....but why do ALL SL smiles close the eyes?

Most of my skins has dark or "sooty" eye makeup and the smile makes the eyes close almost totally, so the eyes appear as "black holes". ;)

It's hard for me who don't have english as 1st language to explain it better. Have anyone seen a smile animation with a full, big smile, that don't turn eyes into thin slits?

the reason is an overlooked item for the past 5 years or so i don't know just a guess there.

all face animators use the same few gestures and overlap them this way or that we have not had many if any new gesterures added for this long maybe longer so until we get new gestures which is doughtful this is what you get

The smile appearance is not determined by animators, it is an expression that LL built-into SL.

awww...crap. *sighs*
So there's nothing to do with it? Nobody can "overrun" it?
I guess LL won't change it or make it more versatile? Since they haven't done it yet.

The facial expresions are not on any of the joints we have control over.

But since you asked for a smile ...
