OK, this may have been posted before and it may not work for you. That being said, I have tested this back and forth several times on my computer (core 2 duo with an 8800GTX video card) and my framerate about doubles. Simply disable the DWM. From: someone The DWM is a key element of the Windows Vista user experience and one of its main functions is to manage the presentation of the Windows desktop by compositing the outputs of multiple applications to the screen. As a complete 3D application in its own right, the DWM uses GPU memory and resources and places an additional load on the GPU, which impacts application graphics performance by approximately 10% for typical applications. End users should weigh the benefits of the DWM and the Windows Aero user interface against this performance cost. An easy way to experiment with a particular application is to disable the DWM, by selecting the Windows Classic or Windows Basic user interface style. Except at least for me, on my system, it is not 10%, it's more like 50%. Specifically, I went from 23FPS to 53FPS under controlled conditions. I'm utterly astonished at reclaiming my performance post-vista. Running SL full screen also bypasses the DWM but there are some UI issue with that.

I'm brand new to Vista. What's a DWM?

DWM = Desktop Window Manager It's basically the thing that gives you all those cool 3d effects on the desktop.. transparencies, app flipping, etc. But that's all just eye candy and it's so easy to turn it on and off. Right click on desktop Select Personalize Select Theme "Windows Classic" and "Windows Basic" don't have DWM (or aero glass) "Windows Vista" and possibly others DO. Just set accordingloy, no reboots, no nada.

There's a much better way to do that. Right click the SL shortcut then click properties. On the compatibility tab check "Disable Desktop Composition" and windows will disable DWM when you run SL and re-enable it when you close it.
It's worth noting that on my 8800 I see no improvement and my frame rates are already very high. (50 or so)

HEH! Old school trick. Disable the 'Eye Candy' and see the improvement. All that fancy interface does is slow things down. I hope more people realize this and shut off the fluff. Its not needed. Even with XP, I use the "classic" interface. Eats less resources.

Yeah well DOS ran in 640K. Most people won't notice the difference between the "eye candy" on or off. Personally I would fire any software developer that made ugly software to save 5% of RAM. It just looks unprofessional.
