Question about using forum: Profile: Group Memberships

When I look at my profile in this forum, there is a section for "Group Memberships", and it says "Jaszon Maynard is not a member of any public groups". What does that mean, what groups is it talking about, I see no groups to join in these forums.

Actually, there is one group I know of. It's called the 'Clique' and everyone may join. It won't show up in your forum profile, though. :p

As for public groups to join, good question, I don't know either. Hope someone else comes along to enlighten both of us.

Yeah, I saw those, they just looked like more sub-forums you can post in, they didn't look like anything you had to actually join.

I've always wondered about this too. I think I am even more confused now than I was before.

Wow, double standard much? People shouldn't 'poke' at you, but it's OK for you to poke at them?

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

For Chrissakes. Can't we let this rest, just once?

It's possible for vBulletin forums to have groups and group forums. We have group forums but no real forum groups. The "group forums", the sub-forums mentioned above, were used to provide forums for use by inworld groups, if the groups requested them and met the requirements.

I think - I'm not sure, but I think - that the Resident Moderators have (had) a hidden group forum here, and a vBulletin group for the Resident Moderators, so that Strife and Cybin and the other Resmods were able to discuss what to do about troublesome posts and other resmoddy topics.

The group forums that still exist can be posted in by anyone, and the moderators of those forums can't ban people from using them. They can delete posts or edit posts though.

We can't get new group forums created, and the existing ones will be deleted after some unspecified period of inactivity.

Thanks for responding. I wondered if you might know the answer.

No? :( How come? After kicking around in Star Wars RP for a bit I think we really could use one...to discuss (in non-real-time) the development of RP events, to discuss avi's/gear/etc, to discuss combat, etc. How did people request them in the past? I see some haven't been posted in since 2006.

That would be fun. Unfortunately, there really isn't a _Real_ General Forum here (official). This (RA) is about as general as it gets. For the moment, you have to go elsewhere. I don't know of any, although I've seen a few mentioned here in the past. I'll try to dig some out for you using search if no one else pops in with suggestions.

Ok. Though I'm not looking for a general forum...I'm trying to find out why we can't create group-specific forums here anymore like we used to be able to. SL is so big & diverse, it should have a big & diverse set of forums.

Totally agree. Reopening Group Life would be great.
For now, all we have is the 'Resident-Run Websites' forum. *sigh*

Do you know who we talk to about that? Do you know why they closed it? How did people used to request the creation of a new group forum back when it was being done?

Darn shame. I'd love to have a kids one there. Of course ;-)

I put in an official request on the Linden JIRA for this. If you'd like to see group forums again, login to the JIRA with your SL name & password and vote for it.

I changed my mind & closed my own Linden request.

To have Linden host every kind of group out there that wants a forum is probably too much.

However, one can easily get yourself a free custom forum site by going to someplace like forumcircle.com. Which is exactly what I did :)
