Does anyone know what key that is on a standard keyboard? LOL I am setting up a new AO....which I know how to use...but the particular default card i have to use....has these pipe symbols that I have no clue how to write in. They are not '//'....but vertical lines larger than capital 'I'. What is that? LOL For all my years on a computer I've never used this symbol...or come across it in basic typing.... *sigh* so much I need to learn.

That's a forward slash. Backslash is this: \ A forward slash is this: /

The backslash key is usually under the backspace key.

- below the backspace key
- above the enter key
- three keys to the right of the P key

If it's not there, let us know what country you are in so we can find the right keyboard. :)

It's in different spots on different keyboards, but it's always shift backslash, graphically, it's looks like two vertical lines one above the other as opposed to the single longer vertical line you see on some fonts like this one ---> |

As others have said, it's normally SHFT+BACKSLASH

If you are really stuck, highlight this one- | then use CTRL - C to copy it and CTRL - V to paste it as many times as you like into your notecard :)

Alternatively it might be:
- to the right of the left-hand shift key
- above the left-hand windows key
- below and between the Caps Lock and the A keys
(and is still shift-backslash).

That's my UK keyboard at home and at work plus any number of other keyboards I've used in the UK.

Heck, if you can't find your slash key, you have bigger problems than setting up an AO! ;)

But a lot of people confuse slash and backslash. I blame Bill Gates.

Slash is what you use to make a fraction, like "1/2". It's also the character used between components of an Internet address (e.g., "http://foo.com/bar";).

Backslash is something you generally only use for Windows file path names: "C:\Program Files\SecondLife".

Dekka, that's the Greek letter "pi", as I bet you know. The character the OP is looking for is known as "vertical bar". In UNIX, it's used on the command line to indicate a "program data pipe", where the output of one program gets fed into the input of another, so folks often call it the "pipe symbol".

BTW, that doesn't work on my keyboard -- I don't know how to get a "π" symbol. Not that it matters!

Ok ok.....whoa...who'd a thunk a thread about keyboards would be so fascinting. Anywho...yeah.... got it....after blinking back the sleep in my eyes a few times last night and focusing on the dam keys a bit better... I got it.

Lear... ya wise a** but yes...the bigger problem I have, actually, is my cats back end draped over the edge of the desk on to the roll out keyboard~!!

Are you German? :D

That's where the pipe is on my keyboard, too, and it's a German "qwertz" keyboard, not "qwerty".

@Milla: Mine do that ALL THE TIME....the flexi keyboard is apparently a nice place to rest on...soft....cosy..... ;)

Is this thread now officially derailed???

If you take the ? symbol and turn it 90 degrees clockwise, you have the pipe symbol needed for Sherlock Holmes stories.

So, put that shift-virgule in your pipe and smoke it.

That's an upside down U-pipe mate. Best used under a sink.

Yes, but you DO have to turn it around again...otherwise it will be pretty hard to connect it to the sink.....

I'd only seriously recommend that if you like wetland environments and never wash your dishes anyway....

Better sit up straight, ashes are falling out and might start a fire :D
/me ignores the gravity issue regarding the smoke from the pipe
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Pipe symbol is ASCII Decimal Character 124.
So, as an alternative, if the key isn't available on the keyboard:
- Switch to the ASCII character set (if necessary)
- Press and hold the Alt key
- Type 124 (on the keypad)
- Release the Alt key
For the OP, glad you had success!
Now for my morning coffee :rolleyes:
