If I'm understanding your question right, its 20 meters to hear regular text chatting and 80 meters for shout.

I thought shouts were 100m (but sensors are 96m.. maybe the same.. dunno) .

Whispers are 10m.

Regular chat can be 'heard' about 28 metres away.

Whispers = 10 metres
Chat = 30 metres
Shout = 100 metres

Yes, sensors are limited to 96 metres

When I tried it out for me it was the same as for Sarah: I got into chat range below 20 m.

But maybe I'm getting deaf ;) How do you manage to listen from 30 m distance?

The knowledge base says:

"Chat is how you communicate with other residents near you inworld in Second Life. Unlike an Instant Message (IM), chat can be heard by anyone (and anything) within range (20m). Click the Chat button at the bottom of the Second Life window. Type what you want to say, then click the Say button to say your message. Anyone within 20 meters of your avatar will see your message."

and

"To shout, click the Shout button after typing your message. You can also press Ctrl+Enter. Anyone within a 100m radius will see your message"

The 20 meters for regular chat and 100 meters for shout is also my personal experience.

I know that officially the range is 20m but when testing with friends while keeping an eye on our scanners we noticed the chat disappearing at around 28 metres.

You need to check your scanner then. On my Mystitool chat ends at 20m. At 21m I can't "hear' a person and at 19m I can.

Is there some confusion here between TEXT CHAT and VOICE CHAT? Normal text chat has a range of 20m,

However there are any number of devices that could enable someone to evesdrop from anywhere on the grid. It's also simple to view a text chat conversation at your camera location which can easily be a couple of sims away or more.

I've always just used the visual method. If you can see the name above their head, then you can hear their chat.

I walk around mostly in mouse look mode so the above doesn't work if you are camming or if you are not in mouse look (first person)

Yes, but any 'new' chatlines only appear when you are within the 20 meter range. When you use the chat bubbles, and you move away from an avatar further than 20 meters, you will notice that only the current chatline is visible over a longer distance.

I've tested this numerous times and have always found chat to end exactly at 20m. Never strays for me either.

It'd be nice if there was a way for avs to whisper. Would prevent those who live in apartments or other crowded dwellings from having to use IM's.
