This looks bad for us: http://netfreedomforever.com/vote.php

One excerpt:
From: someone
Given the new risks and burdens the proposed regulations places on the U.S. banking system, there is little difference between trading real estate in Second Life and other “games of skill” that the regulations target.

The new rules will clearly stifle innovation and the creation of new forms of online interaction. It will be impossible to distinguish new forms of collaborative economic activity from the wagering “games of skill” targeted by the law. For the payment processors, it won't be worth the legal risk to even try.

What does all this mean for SL in the long term?

This has been kicking around a bit. See /327/45/282347/1.html and on SLU, http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/general-sl-discussion/17322-ll-stop-l-soon-lol.html for some discussion. It would seem to be an extreme case of the Chicken Little Syndrome applied to the UIGEA. But that's not to say Barney Frank's bill wouldn't improve things, at least for the financial services industry. And God knows they need it now.

I can't believe the hysteria and misinformation going on some of those sites, I also imagine some of it is Election Year Pandering. I prefer to wait and see if HR 6870 passes before I throw out any zomgwtfelevens. The bill is a sensible one, Mr Frank has been on this issue for a long time, and I think it will go through. If not, you roll the dice and see what happens.

Evidently the Bill passed the Senate, so it goes on to the House now.

Later tonight (after I leave the boring place) I shall have freebie megaprim pillars to keep the sky off your parcel, estate, or sim.

The serious people who are promoting the legalization of online gambling have a number of strong arguments - this is not one of them. There are a couple of huge forums dedicated to online poker, and they have subforums dedicated to this issue. They are forums, of course, so you get idiots and Chicken Littles like the one quoted in the original post, but you can also find commentary from people who know what they are talking about and can realistically predict the impact of this bill. There are lawyers who concentrate in gaming law and know the ins and outs of the process and how far the UIGEA reaches and how it interacts with other state and federal laws. Nobody who is not a political wack job is predicting an impact on Second Life.

The Poker Player's Alliance has been a strong supporter of online gaming and is a great source of information. They are dedicated to their cause, of course, so they are certainly biased, but overall, their info is well written, well presented and accurate.

The issue is gambling, not risking your money online. Land in Second Life is a risk, but it does not meet the definition of a gamble. Buying shares of stock on eTrade or wherever is a risk as well.

As one who is very familiar with the UIGEA from its inception to date I'm not concerned about the impact on Second Life. For safe measure there is a bill under revision in Congress that will suspend the UIGEA regulations for anything outside of sports betting until the government provides more concise definitions and guidelines for financial institutions including a clear definition of unlawful internet gambling.

Yes. That's Barney Frank's Bill, which passed The Senate last night.

Excellent statement of the heart of the matter.
