I note several mentions today of V 1.20 and another about WindLight gone, just about to log in to my up to date viewer 1.19.1 (4) and not being offered a new version.
Was it being offered and now withdrawn because of problems?

1.20 is the curret release candidate viewer. It hasn't become the official viewer yet.

Wish they had said that in thier posts.
I'm puzzled now about the RC and its status you see as prior to V 1.19.1 I was on RC and have been for a while, then a week or so ago the RC with its WindLight became the normal viewer so I dropped RC for the normal. I thought that was it for the RC. Just leaving the test one, is that Beta.
So if RC as continued I need to get it back again.

RC did not become normal. They just brought windlight into the normal viewer.

RC at the moment is windlight, with the Dazzle UI, as well as including a couple useful things, like the ability to script with glow, without using the number in the llSetPrimParams bit

As a small niggle I should point out that there are forums devoted to this type of thing, a bit further down on the forum front page.

Current Version Feedback = For the current release version.
First Look Viewer = For the current preview-on-the-main-grid version.
Beta Test Grid = For the current Aditi version.

Most would probably be a better bet than RA for technical discussion. :)

They do it like this:

First Look>Release Candidate>Main

First Look is basically alpha software, an early attempt, and will probably be full of bugs and issues. The Release Candidate is beta software, more stable and usable than First Look, but still not quite a viable option as a main viewer. Once they've (theoretically) worked out enough of the problems for a major release, it becomes the main viewer.

It's a software life cycle for ALL viewers, not just certain ones.

no can't be. the camera springiness is totally different and i think the graphics are off. so i don't think it's just an addition of dazzle.

That's the main addition is what I meant

Looks just like old windlight to me, just with brighter UI. And the 'camera springiness' I think can be set in your preferences, I think there's a 'camera sensitivity' option. Then again, maybe I'm thinking EQ2 >.<

ETA:
From: The Blog

UI: This Release Candidate includes significant updates to the visual design and architecture of the Viewer’s user interface, including:

June, I'd suggest you subscribe to the Linden Lab blog RSS feed. That way, you'll have a running update on all postings from LL, right at the top of your browser, all the time. As soon as an announcement comes out from LL, you'll know it.

It's not really reasonable to expect that forum posters would repeat LL's announcements in their own posts when the information is already freely available to the public. That's what the blog is for, really.

FYI: The announcement of the new RC viewer, designated version 1.20, was posted to the blog yesterday. http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/09/updated-new-release-candidate-viewer-120-rc0-available/

That's how the process works. When a new viewer is almost ready for release, it becomes a "release candidate". Once it's ready, it moves over to become the new main viewer. Then, whatever was in the pipeline behind it becomes the new release candidate.

Think of it kind of like standing in line for a ticket at the movies. When the guy in front of you buys his ticket, and you're the one who's next, you could call yourself the current "ticket buyer candidate". Then, when it becomes your turn, you're not longer a candidate, you're the actual buyer. The guy behind you is now the candidate. And when it's his turn, the guy behind him becomes the candidate. And so on, and so forth.

That was it for 1.19 being a candidate, but it wasn't the end of candidates altogether. All that happened was 1.19 graduated to become the main viewer, and then 1.20 naturally became the next candidate. When 1.20 is completed, it will then become the main viewer, and 1.21 will become the candidate. Make sense?

It's how LL's process works, subtle difference :p.

An RC is supposed to represent a code/feature freeze where all the functionality and changes have been sufficiently tested to warrant a "ready for release" stamp. The only bugfixing that takes place is showstopper bugs. Other bugs (let alone feature changes) are postponed until a later release because introducing them into the RC would compromise the tested stability of the RC.

LL's RC corresponds with a very early "community preview" alpha release and the main viewer what would normally be a beta given its general lack in overall stablity and unforgivable bugs.

Not able to log in atm, but I'm curious, does 1.20 RC mean that those of us still using 1.19 RC are forced to update? or can we still use the 1.19 RC?

Downloaded it.
Oh dear!
Black words on silver background I'm finding hard to read, gave up in My Inventory and turned SL off.
Going back to the normal viewer, if the normal viewer becomes this well my SL days will be over.

Got an improvement now.
04-11-2008 00:45
Well I have given RC 20.1 another go.
I've tried adjustments to my monitor settings. One in particular as helped greatly with the black print on silver. It is a setting for what you are useing the monitor for was set at "Gaming", so put it to "Text" and it is better black print.
Of course I assume, because I can't tell as yet anyway, I have compromised the picture quaulity.

Well... there are some fun new features... the nature of elements of the new interface is good... I like some of the subtle use of images where none were before...

However... and I cannot stress ths enough...

The color scheme is absolutely fricking revolting.
Where do I go to whinge...?

& guys... shame on you... complaining about our prim hair/jewelry/skirt/shoes while some of you are 2-4 times as bad :p.

"Support for non-powers-of-two textures"

Does that mean we can FINALLY upload 32x33 sculpt maps????

It would seem not. I just uploaded a 32x33 to test, and it rounded it to 32x32. Whether other odd sizes will work, I don't know. It seems the asset server is having issues again. Everything I've uploaded since that first one has been frozen for the past 15 minutes at "0x0" and gray.

Asset server headaches aside, I'm guessing from the rounding of that first upload that what it actually means is the architecture is there, but that it probably won't be switched on until 1.20 becomes the main viewer. It probably wouldn't be healthy to have one viewer out there that can display those textures and one that can't. Unless there's some kind of magic already built into the older viewer to do the necessary rounding in real time, you might have people unable to load the odd sized textures, or they might even make the other viewers crash.

Point taken. But really, with Internet Explorer dominating about 75% of the market, Firefox at about 17%, and Safari at about 6%, there's only about a 2% chance that any given person would be using a different browser. Since all three of those browsers do put RSS feeds right at the top of the screen, I don't think there's much danger in assuming that that's where somebody is going to find his or hers.
