Remove traffic from the new search all, there's a tip on how to improve search rankings.

LL should just replace that blog post with a link to Phil Deakins' thread.

Lol,

notice the blog post makes no mention of using traffic bots or campers to improve traffic.

True. Many comments mention it though ... and we know that several Lindens read Blog comments.

I don't think the Search is really smart enough to look for "swimming pools" rather than just swim swimming pool pools.

In fairness to Jeska, in the comments people point that out to her, and she confirms they'll look into it more. Seems they were led to believe that was the case by Google...

Absolutely. While I'm not 100% convinced about how much impact Landmarks have, that thread has been invaluable. Since I started seriously implementing the suggestions in there about a week ago, I've got up to page 4/5 (from nowhere) for "Rental", which has some strong competition in there. I reckon I could get a few pages higher if I persuaded a few more people to include picks.

I agree. At least send Phil a check for doing all the work.

Comments are still open on the blog, someone should post a link to that thread. I would, but I'm not sure which it is.

So.....

If everyone did what was needed to maximize their search ranking it would all sort of cancel out, right?

Not to pick on Jeska, but they've had this thing running for what, 6 months? And nobody has actually checked to see if features like that work as advertised? Ugh.

I got a chuckle out of "Cloaking Sucks" too. Nowhere do they state that it doesn't work (seems to work great if the sheer volume of places that use it is any indicator) nor that it is against the rules (and this was confirmed in the comments; it is indeed not against the rules). It just sucks. Just say no. Cloaks are bad mmk? Yeah right.

Some will always be better than others. It's just one more important thing a business person has to know.

They won't cancel themselves out - the ones that get more picks will rise to the top. And the tiebreaker will go to whoever has more traffic. :P

You could argue the same about web pages all being cancelled out when using Google®, and yet it still seems to return vaguely useful stuff most of the time.
