Is it just the letters and words? What graphics card is your relative running? Does he/she have the latest drivers for the graphics card?

Which version of SL? I did something using the latest Windlight last night and managed to render the avatar names and some other text totally illegible in a way I've never seen before.

Copying the system info from Help About Second Life and pasting it here would be useful.

SL has several flavors. The regular viewer, the release candidate, and the first look viewer, also called the Windlight viewer since that's it main focus currently.

The top line in the Help / About Second Life dialog shows what version you are running.

A screenshot might help diagnose the problem.

You might try changing the UI size from what it is to something else. Edit / Preferences / Graphics / UI Size:

Help / About Second Life will show information like that shown below that you can copy and paste here.

Read the posts in this thread.

If your SL test display is so garbled you can't read the menu to do Help / About Second Life and copy the text at the top that shows you the information shown in the post above, then you can right click the windows desktop and get a Display option.

You can also use the Control Panel to get to the Display information.
