Generic PnP Monitor Chrome9 HC IGP WDDM is your monitor, not your graphics card. Take a look under Display Adapters in Device Manager to identify it correctly. (Right click My Computer, select Properties, Hardware Tab > Device Manager button.)

Sounds very much like you have an unsuitable graphics card (more than likely an integrated Intel or S3 sharing main system RAM).

Generic PnP Monitor is the monitor, Chrome9 HC IGP WDDM is a Via Chrome9 Integrated Graphics Processor, WDDM is Windows Display Driver Mode. I don't see what HC stands for.

The Via Chrome9 is a real low end onboard video processor.

It can't hurt to try to find an updated driver for it, but I wouldn't expect much beyond getter SL to run instead of that, if that.

Thanks for the correction SuezanneC. :)

A quick Google reveals this GPU has no OpenGL hardware support, so it's completely unsuitable for Second Life.

So.....

It appears that you will need to buy a video card - there are numerous threads on video cards in these forums already.

You'd need to know what kind of video your system supports, whether it's a PCI-E, or AGP, or a plain PCI, or what. A normal modern computer will come with a PCI-E, an older one with an AGP slot.

There is a very easy solution to you problem....cant believe nobody mentioned it!!

Download the Windows version onto your Vista computer.

Right click on the SL shortcut icon on your desktop.

Goto Properties and click on the compatibility tab.

Then tick the 'run this program in compatibility mode for...Windows XP (Service Pack 2)' box.

Then Apply and OK.

You are now running SL in XP compatibility on Vista :-)

I also run SL on Vista, but keep in mind Vista is not supported by the powers that be... which they need to get baking on....

I do have/had graphic issues, as well as audio issues.... (I freeze up while listining to live music stream, and sometimes shoutcast streams)... this is an ongoing problem I have/having..... Tried all sorts of things... "sigh" NE way...
Good luck!

Unfortunately Vista isn't the issue because the graphics adapter isn't supported whatever operating system you use. It only has DirectX hardware support, not OpenGL. (Second Life uses OpenGL.)

Basically, if the OP could follow SuezanneC's advice and work out what kind of expansion slots (PCI-E, AGP, etc.) their system has (the manual should include these details), the best we can really do is recommend an affordable graphics card. :(

If it's a laptop then the OP is really out of luck because you just cannot upgrade their GPUs.
