So, I was torturing a prim and came up with something I really like. I wanted to save a copy, so to exit edit mode I hit the ESC key, as I always do. My prim went *poof* and I got the following message in general chat:

[13:13] Second Life: Your object 'Object' has been returned to your inventory lost and found folder from parcel 'Anya's place' at Feted 198.212, 36.8012 because it went off-world.

Huh? What does this mean?

Most likely your priim fell through the ground and kept going. Happens to me all the time.

lil Linden goblins came by, stole it and ran all the way to the edge of the sim full speed until they bounced back into your inventory.

Dang things take my objects all the time

It simply means you must have accidentally pushed it beyond the sim's edges and it was returned to your inventory. Look in your Lost & Found folder, you'll find it as 'Object'.

I hope you object did turn up in your lost and found. I'm curious as to why you leave edit mode just to take a copy. You can just click on the object while in edit mode and then click on the "more" from the pie menu, then click on take copy.

Or, while in edit mode and the object is still selected, click on the Tools menu, then Take Copy.

...or just click-drag to make an instant copy right then and there?

But off-world sounds like it went for a walk in RL... ;)

You tortured your prim so much that it couldn't take the pain anymore and it ran away from home.

It appears to be a bug or something. When I was torturing prims, I got this too. The prims were non-physical so they couldn't fall anywhere, I was in the middle of a sim (which is just 1 large parcel), and I was just hanging around on the ground.

So I'm mystified too why my tortured prims would decide to go off world. 100M from a sim edge, non-physical, etc. I re-rezzed it out of my l-n-f and continued working on it just fine. It seems that tortured prims have some kind of "random" chance of vaporizing like this.

The solution I found was to take incremental copies as others have suggested, and when one decides to nuke itself, you rez your copy (sometimes it will be returned to l-n-f, sometimes it won't). Doesn't seem to be any specific set of conditions that makes a prim vaporize, or fail to return to l-n-f.
