You Do NOT Have to Use the RC 1.20 Viewer

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this, but the RC 1.20 is not a mandatory download. If you were using the prior RC for its Windlight capabilities, you will get a message saying it's mandatory, but that's not actually the case unless you want to continue testing software for LL.

The prior RC client has moved to main viewer status, version 1.19.1.4. It's Windlight-enabled and is available on the Downloads page.

http://www.secondlife.com/support/downloads.php

So, instead of accepting the 1.20 download, decline and uninstall the previous RC, then install the main viewer and you should be fine.

If you are not a fan of Windlight, 1.19.0.5 also still works for now and the links are available in this blog post:

http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/03/the-new-viewer-a-well-oiled-machine/

The mandatory viewers are currently 1.19 versions; 1.20 is optional.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Surely when 1.20 becomes the standard viewer we will have to use it.

I have trouble understanding how anyone could have downloaded a test viewer without reading up on all the different clients. Maybe having them all on the blog has people DL by accident?

New RC's should never be announced on the blog. It's obviously very confusing for a lot of people. They should also title the pop-up as Ann did " You Do NOT Have to Use the RC", or some such.

I think the confusion is actually because people wanted to use the Windlight RC and LL didn't make them switch to the main viewer version when it went live. They continued to use the last Windlight RC and now they're getting the 'mandatory download' message for 1.20 without knowing that it's actually a different Release Candidate.

I don't take it personally, LL has just successfully confused the hell out of a bunch of people and I'm trying to help.

I don't know what you need to do, though...I've never had an install failure that rebooting and reinstalling wouldn't fix. :(

I know this is going to sound mean... But anyone trying out the FL or RC clients that are unaware of their beta state enough to complain publicly about it's functionality without properly sending bug-reports to the development team shouldn't be using that specific client anywayz. (>_<;)

I was using the RC because it was far more stable for me at the time (about a month ago when I was crashing every 5 minutes) and I stuck with it because it was pretty. I like windlight. I'm not liking the 1.20 version because of the change in the menus and icons and such. I guess the codename for this is "dazzle" and it sure does, you'll need sunglasses it's so bright. But I see theres a workaround for this already so I'll keep using it. but at some point it will be the official release, don't people want to know what they're in for?

Yes... the windows are too bright, particularly as usually I have 30-40% of my screen covered with them and it soon becomes taxing... but to be honest... I actually LIKE some of the new features... but then again, I also like Vista... so...

The main viewer now has Windlight as well.

It's *supposed* to have customizable skins before it goes to official release status, so people won't be stuck with the scary blue color at least. In any case, while I did look at it, I don't see the point in using that version regularly until some of the bugs have been worked out.
