Bitmaps, but I usually convert mine to jpg once I've downloaded and delete the bmp version.

I was sure I saw that you could somewhere..
For some reason I'm thinking that if you check 'high resolution screenshot to disk' (Or w/e it's called) it saves as jpg.. I was sure you could do it somehow.. maybe I'm insane.. _____________________

I know I saw somewhere you could save as jpeg..meh Well for now (Until I find the non-existant jpg option) you could download FRAPS for free and do it that way, since you can have it to jpeg that way. _____________________

Freeware app

I use Gladwin PrintScreen - a great freeware app.
Amongst other customisable functions you can save in Jpg or bmp. Been using it for ages - works really well, highly recommended and much better (in my humble opinion) than anything you can do from within the sl viewer. http://www.gadwin.com/download/ |

If you put a check next to "compressed snapshots to disk" (I think it's in the Tools menu), it saves your shots in JPEG 2000 format. (I think the extension is .jp2).

You can save all the bmp snapshots you like during your SL session and then convert them all to jpg at once, very handy. _____________________
