When I go shopping in mega stores, especially big hair stores with 3 levels of picts, etc - after about 5 minutes or so, I feel sort of ill/dizzy. I'm not sure if it's the brightness (which I've now lowered) or just me panning across the signs too quickly. There's even a kind of internal ringing in my ears. Mouse look is even worse while the picture is rezzing. This doesn't happen in smaller shops. I suppose that it's just one more reason to stick to Mom&Pop places, but for hair, it's kind of nice to have many choices. Before anyone says it, no I haven't been taking any SL drugs,

This is one of the reasons that I prefer to shop at SLExchange.com and OnRez.com
Not only do I not have to deal with mega malls, laaaag, 35 other shoppers running over each other and running into me .... but it also gives me the chance to shop and compare prices from multiple creators. If I'm looking for Animated Christmas Lights ... I can spend an hour in-world searching and going from store to store ... or I can do a search on SLExchange.com and immediately see several different people's offerings and prices, plus I can read reviews and comments from people who have already bought them. I do 95% of my shopping at SLX or OnRez .... |

I don't recall feeling ill, but I will say that I've developed an extreme dislike of certain stores such as Textures R Us and Pixel Dolls (as much as I love Neph's stuff) because it just feels like walking through soup - and I have a newer computer with tons of memory and a decent graphics card. Anytime I have to go texture shopping I end up putting it off until I have several hours to kill and a bottle of wine to ease the pain/frustration.

Pixel Dolls (as much as I love Neph's stuff) because it just feels like walking through soup Have you been since they rebuilt? It's a bunch of smaller shops now. ![]() Erm, and no, no vertigo in SL. WoW sometimes gives me that feeling though, especially after I've had a bit of a time out. _____________________

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things. Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut. |

yes I get that as well
really bad in games like wow, which I had to stop playing because of the way it made me feel I have to look away from the PC quite often (try that it helps) vertigo sucks, and when something triggers it to flare up that is even worse (I deal with vertigo on a daily basis, which is also why I choose to not drive a car) _____________________

I have to admit, I feel a little weird when shopping in places with so many items crammed into every available space.... I love a place where there's obviously been some thought put into the look and feel. I HATE it when the products are up so very very high.....what's the point in that. I know that you can use the camera control to zoom around but it's just another pain in the neck.
I paid a visit to 'A Touch of Ireland' in the new sim...and gotta say, I've never seen a place like it.... The designers must have pulled a few all-nighters designing the layout. It's absolutely gorgeous and so easy to navigate, there's even a plush changing room...haven't seen that before. |

I can shop for builds and devices on SLX. But I need to troll through the shops for hair, shapes and bikinis. Those online shopping websites do not have very good images available for the shopper (since the images and descriptions are written by the sellers).

I don't get nauseous, but I do get dizzy shopping in places where there is so much choice. I think it must be quite difficult to present so many products in a meaningfull way. I sometimes envie people with a large range of products, but every business has its own kind of problems.
When shopping for hair or skin I very much rely on sources outside of SL (like blogs) to find what I want. Then when I get to the shop, I know what I am looking for. Just need to find it .I think owners of big shops could use a system to find their products by name... _____________________

I am reminded of the time a friend took me to the real life Bellevue horticultural gardens to see the christmas lights. They have thousands of those smallest christmas tree lights woven around the plants. It was beautifully and tastefully done. After about 20 minutes we both got nauseous and headachey and had to leave. I do believe there was something about those lights that my brain or nervious system did not like.

I get a headache. I think it's the frustration of trying to fight through the lag and trying to find that one special accessory among the crowd of gray placards. I've taken to reading a book while I'm shopping. It helps to focus my eyes on something else than the screen while it's rezzing.
I've just discovered the fashion blogs too -- but darn, they can be frustrating suggesting some little item that finishes off an outfit and that's the one item you can't find after spending time and L$'s on the rest of it. They're great for ideas, but I'd rather do my own thing. -- KC |

Same feeling here... Big shops makes me feel like I'm in a big shop RL too, and getting pissed off and tiiiiiiired.
I've never bought on SLX or OnRez, but will try to... seems much better and relaxed ![]() _____________________

Hm, that vertigo feeling could be caused by your monitor (or LCD) refresh rate. It should be 75 Hrz or above. Take a look in your Display Properties, Settings, Advanced, Monitor. The screen refresh rate is listed in the middle. The range of rate depends entirely in your particular graphics adapter and its drivers.
The reason why low rates cause dizziness is because it makes the screen flickers, although it may not be evident to you. _____________________

Gee, if you ever want to feel sicker than you are, Google a symptom. Vertigo can be caused by among other things, a tumour, manière disease, or multiple sclerosis (no mention of SL shopping disorder LOL.) I think I'll just cut down on my hair browsing for a little time... but I'm glad I'm not the only one. Well not exactly GLAD - I feel for those who feel the same way.
Edit: Oh hey there Calveen - great suggestion, thank you very much, I'll try that! |

When I am visiting a club with lots of flashing lights and spinning movement, I tend to get a bit dizzy. Maybe its just a bit much for these aging eyes lol

.... I know it's not that important, all I have to do is avoid those places, but I'm curious to know if it happens to others... Western malls are typically designed by people who have spent years studying design, merchandising, and all in between. They have departments of dozens to hundreds of people devoted to exact placement of just about everything in the store. Not even a simple counter-top box with samples in it is placed whimsically. on teh contrary, anyone in/been to asia? The malls there are typically packed with stores owned by individuals, and its all about volume. 7 stories high, no room to breathe... I'll puke in those malls just as some may in the SL malls. With the young age of Second Life, malls tend to follow the asian style for several reasons... real estate being the biggest. Unfortunately the vendors should realize that when confronted with too many decisions, the customer will just leave. |
