has anybody had a serious play with OpenSim yet?

http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Main_Page

it got mentioned today in this post -

/327/07/220674/1.html

as an offline building environment, and then later, somebody inworld was talking about it as a real alternative to sl once the age verification begins to bite.

This really caught my interest, and I am curious to know what the limitations and possibilities might be.

I'm in the midst of setting it up on a development box this weekend.

Last time I used it, it was in alpha. If you are uber-geeky, you will love it. If not, you will get frustrated fast.

First thought would be good luck finding a host that'll appreciate you running an explicit adult "site" without any age verification whatsoever, and/or someone who's willing to take legal responsibility for running it.

Also, you'd have no inventory and no L$, no friends and not even your own "name" which would make the whole experience rather dull for a lot of people and entirely unsuitable for content creators (no economy and the sim owner can just change permissions on their creations).

Open Sim works!

I have had it running on my LAN for a while.

noteworthy:
-Physics dont work too well, AV-ground ok, Av- object borky (I think they are working on a new module)
-Tera forming is done on the command line (neat to drop the ground out from under your friends feet!)
-As far as I can tell, Avatars aren't stored between sessions
-no scripting yet
-Sculpted prims work fine !!!!
-I had 6 avatars running on my desktop machine as a server with no noticeable slowdowns

Overall I would say its well worth it to try it out, the other spinoff project 'Dgig' looks interesting but I havent tried it

it's a wee bit of an assumption that i'd want to do that!

Thanks folks, it'll prolly be about january before i get time to play with the thing, but based on your feedback it looks quite promising. It looks a lot more scaleable than sl in the long run, or have i misunderstood it?

That was more of a general "you" than a you "you" :).
