how is that a friend can see me online when i have "can see my online status" unchecked and "make my online status visible only to my friends" checked in preferences

Let's of ways. Hiding yourself from your friends only hides your status in the friends list. If they pull up your profile it will say you are online. If you're in the same group the group list will say you are online. If they check the website it will say u r online.

It really sucks but that's the way it is. No real way to hide in SL unless you get an alt.

They can also query the database with a script and find out if you're online or not. I don't know if database queries are blocked when you hide your online status but I suspect they are not blocked.

Actually, the last time I checked, your profile does not show you as online, nor does the website. However, group lists will still show your online status (of course, your friend has to be a member of the same group to see). Also, I think it is still true that the Teleport button on your profile is suspiciously active if you're online but hiding your online status.

nope not in the same groups as them an they im soon as i come on . i know about the group thing . as far as them being my friends , they are more like acquaintances . still with the way i have my settings how do they see me ?

Everyone can see you no matter how you check it.

Think Rusty posted it - finally explained why some person i had on hide cause she was annoying suddenly kept knowing when I was online ...

There are plenty of HUDs available which can be set to inform you when people are online based on their UUID, which is not affected by any friends list visibility settings selected.. They don't even need to be in your friends list.

Search SLEX for Friends Online and you'll find a few such HUDs..

Aaaahh, that explains it all. I had no idea. Goodness I'm dim. I thought this one friend of mine was just trying their luck at about the time they know I'm often online, but then it started to get kinda creepy, they were so accurate.

thanks , i did search before posting this . must have used the wrong keywords . at least that clears that up . so much for privacy and anti-stalking lol .
