hi all.
Oh here is me, just newly Born into this interesting place. help island. I am in no hurry, listening to the harp in the house and wandering the island.
I keep finding interesting "urls" for worlds and places. I wonder just how many that there are?
I have to Ask someone, probably one of the "Rube" questions of the week: is there a somewhat currant directory of worlds and places, in SL?! I know they change all of the time, and all of that, but of course I am not interested in all places to visit.
I am 68 years old and not really interested in clubs and bars, I am interested in strange and thoughtful, philisophical, places. More like the few that I have found allready and bookmarked. like: the Libray, the buddist monestary, the afterlife realms, Rome 100 AD, etc.
so so many.
I gotta ask this, i guess, thanks for anyone who might try to give to me an all inclusive "directory" link!

It's all sort of too big, I think; it would be a bit like a directory of the Web. What there is, is Search, and just looking for topics that interest you. Some folks use the "Places" tab in Search; I prefer the "All" tab because often matches with Groups or individual Residents are just as useful as the Places (which are also returned by Search / All). When you find something (or somebody) interesting, it's often informative to snoop a bit more for related information at the location or on the resident's Profile. What groups do they belong to? Do they have any interesting Picks? Who made the interesting object, and what can you learn from their Profile? There's also the "Showcase" tab in Search, which may give some basic places to begin. Usually the actual Showcase locations aren't anything very special, but they can be jumping-off points on the expedition of discovery. Also, to get a geographic "lay of the land" for Mainland, you may want to check out the excellent maps that Carl Metropolitan produces; you can find them and get your own copies of the map kiosks at any NCI ("New Citizens Incorporated" campus. There are lots of other things to learn and helpful people to meet at NCI, too.

Profile surfing while you are at a place you like can be good too. Many times people with interests similar to yours will have places listed in their picks that might be of interest.
Exploring roads and waterways often is a good way to find a wide range of people and places. You might get bounced off of banlines or security orbs some but it can still be worthwhile. Some of my favorite art galleries and monastery type places I have found randomly exploring the mainland.
Feel free to IM me in world and I can give you some landmarks or would be happy to take you for a drive or sail.

Hello stony! Welcome to SL.
I don't have a long list to share but, like you, I am not very interested in visiting bars or clubs. When I'm inworld and feeling a bit bored, I will usually look at the locations listed under the ShowCase tab in search. I've found a few wonderful places to explore that way. You will see that there are different categories including arts, education, fashion, etc.
Don't rule out places that have descriptions that might not be of particular interest to you. One place that I found while out shopping for a particular item turned out to be one of the most interesting locations that I've found in SL. This place is listed in the ShowCase as a Hotspot and if I hadn't already located it during my shopping expedition, I would have shrugged the place off based on the description of it being "noirpunk-themed". The place is called Suffugium.
Again, welcome to SL!

You can try this website for places to visit. There's also an inworld group by the same name that you can join. Every Friday they pass you a notecard of 10 places in SL to explore. http://b-places.com/

The whole of Second Life is one world - with a map to show where all the regions are. A region (or sim) is a square area that is 256 metres x 256 metres and there are thousands of them in SL, divided between 'mainland continents' (which are really just large islands) and private islands which are mostly a single region but may consist of several regions. Around the coast and between some islands there is sea that you can fly/swim/sail across, but most of the open ocean areas on the map you can't cross, so sometimes teleporting is the only way to reach somewhere. As mentioned above, 'SEARCH' is a good way of finding places - especially the showcase tab. But the map can be useful too - you can zoom in and out on it.

Mind if I send you some landmarks? I also picked up some note cards put together by NCI which sound interesting. I will send you the NCI infohub link too (if you want this stuff, just say.) I'm in world just now and doing nothing but kicking 'my feet' in the ocean.
