In the upper right corner of the screen, to the right of your Linden $ balance is a seach block. It is possible to show two tiny lag indicator lights there instead of the search block. (This is the way it was way back in the old browser)

I have this set on my regular SL viewer. So I know it can be done. But I forgot how I did it. (smacks the side of my head)

Does anyone know how to change the search block under the X to the two tiny lag indicators.

For noobies info, this is NOT the "Lag Meter" from the menu.

Strictly speaking, they are not "lag indicators", but network indicators; one showing that downloading is in progress, the other if there is any lost packets.
I always forget where they are myself...
It's Advanced (Ctrl+Alt+D), UI, Show search panel in overlay bar.

I remember an older version of the viewer had that but was removed a while ago. The current viewer does not have it.
Edit: Nevermind, as said above, the Advanced Menu enables it...

What would actually be more helpful would be an "asset server" health meter :D

Meter showing red? Don't rez anything!

now if only they hadn't made those indicators nigh on useless by removing the mouseover numbers you used to be able to get from them

Lag Meter

You can also put up the lag meter - you'll find it under Help. It shows the status of the Client, Network, and Server. Now that IS scary.

Unfortunately you have to reset it each time you log on - at least, I do. If someone knows of a way to keep it up there permanently I'd be glad to hear it.
