From: Damaskinos Molina Is there way to appear offline to people on your friends list when you log on at all? Thanks I need this feature HI, and welcome to the forum. Yes, there is. Open your friends list (communicate button lower left on viewer, choose contacts) and you will see boxes by the names of your friends. Uncheck the one about being visible to them. You will have to do this with each name on the list you want to change. If you are in a group that they are in, they will be able to see you online in the group listing regardless of the settings on your friends list though. I hope that helps and good luck!

If you share any groups or they send you what's meant to be an offline IM, they'll still know you're on though...there's no absolute way to hide.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I'll add two things to the previous advice.
There is no way (no way of which I know) for you to check your visibility status offline. So if you didn't make yourself not visible before the last time you logged out, you're ginig to be initially visible the next time you log on.
There are also scripts available allowing those running the scripts to check the online status of anyone, whether on a friends list or not, whether that visible option is checked or not. As far as I know, very few people actually use scripts like that, so making yourself not visible on your Friends list probably accomplishes what you'd like 99% of the time. However, don't rely on it to hide from the jealous partner or the stalker.
