I'm trying to find out as much as I can about purchasing/leasing land in SL, but I'm not sure how to tell which regions are mainland and which are private. I.E. if I'm looking at land for sale in a region, we'll call it Bellyland for this example, how do I know if it's mainland real estate or privately owned? Is there a way to tell by coordinates perhaps? Thanks!

I'm sure someone else will get an answer in more quickly and efficiently than me, but since I didn't see a reply yet I figure I'll give it a go.

You can look in the about land window, by clicking on the ground on that land, or by the "world" drop down at the top of the screen or by clicking the parcel name at the top of the screen.

Borkotron...is that one of the new last names? I like it.

When you go into the About Land window, click over to the Covenant tab. If the land has no covenant, and can be resold, divided and joined, then it is Mainland (i.e. not privately owned.) If the land has a covenant, that means that someone else owns the entire parcel ACCORDING TO LINDEN LAB, and by renting this parcel, you will pay that person, and NOT Linden Lab.

Also, under the Covenant tab, it should say "Estate: mainland"

Additionally, if you go to New Citizens Inc. (NCI, main campus at Kuula), there are maps of the mainland continents. There are 6 large continents. If you zoom out on the map, and you're on one of those, you're on mainland.

Thanks for the help, everyone! I really appreciate it. I'm slowly getting the hang of things... :p

Thank you! Though "Snoodle" would have been my second choice, haha.

Just knowing there IS a difference between mainland and estates puts you ahead of the curve.

Welcome!
