I can sit, but not where and how the designer intended.

If I choose a towel, couch, chair etc..., to sun bathe, lounge or relax, I end up in an upright condition with my feet sticking into the sand, the couch or the chair.
Did I choose the wrong option somewhere?

Did I choose the wrong option somewhere? Could just be that the animation is loading still? Does it fix itself after a bit? Also, if there is a poseball, sit on THAT, not the object itself.. some objects also dont have a sit position set, and so that.. just happens

I'll try it out on a pose ball. But on 'touch' furniture, it drags me there and places me in an upright position.
I should mention this is on my ALT account and that on my main, I can utilize the furniture features in their proper manner.

Are you wearing an animation override? Lots of them include sit animations, there is usually a button to disable them. It's usually best to leave that feature off, those sits are rarely useful.

All AOs and such are switched off?
(blast, as above)

Yep...what Ordinal said. Check to see if your AO is off.

I've recently had this problem and for me it was lag. Possibly the animation inside the device disappeared from the database but if that's happening for everything then I would say lag.

I'm not wearing any animation overrides. I'm wearing skin, hair, a shirt and shorts. That's it. Can an AO reside in hair or skin?
And since my main does not have this problem in the same sim, I don't think it's caused by lag.

Yes, an override can exist in any prim. Try 'detach all' and sitting. That is a really weird situation you're in.

I've seen this only when people buy for instance furniture and place it on their land using a group tag (or just the opposite). When they don't wear the group tag the effect occurs as you describe. And from what I've seen, it usually happens on rented land. Mind you, I'm not entirely sure if I remember this well, but it is something like this.
