I am new to SL, and want to work hard at being a clothing, jewelry and furniture designer. I understand that I will have to learn one at a time. Can someone help me, or direct to a place that will help me get started?

Start by taking some basic building classes. Search > Events, using the Education filter.
You may not like the project they're working on, but the tools they teach you will be invaluable ![]() Edit: And welcome to SL, have a great time! _____________________

Welcome to SL Tonylynn. IMO the building classes I took were terrible. The instructor was terrible. The amount I learned was invaluable. Go take some classes and don't get too frustrated. Take from them what you can and keep working at it. It takes time but is a lot of fun and can be worth it.

Hi Tonylynn, welcome to the forums.
![]() Be sure to check out the content creation forums here: Building Tips: /8/1.html Texturing Tips: /109/1.html Scripting Tips: /54/1.html Animation Tips: /52/1.html Building Tips focuses on the creation of prim objects, including sculpties and avatar attachments like prim hair and prim skirts. Texturing Tips focuses on the creation of skins and clothing (which are textures on your av) as well as texturing prims. Scripting and Animation, well those are pretty much what they sound like. ![]() |

Can someone help me, or direct to a place that will help me get started? Welcome from one n00b to another ![]() I would also suggest if you visit some of the established clothing/deco stores and talk to the owners/creators. they may have valuable insight and specific suggestions on how they got their foot in the door and point you in the way of a exact class or teacher or web site. ![]() enjoy! _____________________

Find some modifiable freebies, and take them apart, alter them, modify them. Best way to learn.

Do a place search for Ivory Tower (Ivory Tower of Prims I think is the full name), it's a great place to go to learn the very basics.

Check Youtube to see if their are video tutorials.
There are some sticky threads at the top of the Building and Texturing forums. Those have very useful info in them. There are modifiable objects in your Inventory in the Library folders - you can take those apart and fiddle with them and use them a guides to try to make your own copy. _____________________

I would definitely agree that taking all sorts of classes can be so helpful in teaching you the basics of building, texturing etc. I always check the 'events' listings for classes, click 'notify' on the ones I think I might be interested in taking...and If I happen to be online and get a notification, I just tp there....
Also, I had this idea in my head when I first tried to make clothing... I made my first top...it was absolutely awful....but I said to myself, that when I can make a halfway decent outfit, then and only then would I take it off.....needless to say I learned pretty quickly.... I'm not that brave when it comes to skins though....... |

Do a place search for Ivory Tower (Ivory Tower of Prims I think is the full name), it's a great place to go to learn the very basics. The full name is the Ivory Tower of Primitives and it is probably the best couple of hours you will spend in SL (well, possibly with the exception of pixel sex, haha). It has useful displays and easy to read notecards, and some tutorials that you can do at your own pace. I highly recommend starting at the Ivory Tower and getting to understand what you are dealing with, and then go to an advanced class later on at NCI. _____________________

Google for Second Life XXX Turorial where XXX is whatever you are interested in.
Or ... Just go here : http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2006/11/build.html I still think Natalia Zelmanov is the best place to learn almost anything SL, including SL culture, norms and mores. |

Quite a few Sandboxes also have tutorial boards where you can read about the basics and have a place to practice building. Just remember to clean up after yourself(TAKE or delete)before you leave. I've taken some classes at the NCI Centers, <ASL>, University at Rockcliffe, Dreams Classrooms and there are private tutors you can hire to teach you. I must have been lucky in the classes I took, I had very good instructors. The Ivory Tower of Primitives is a great place too. There also stores where you can buy building kits to learn how to make items. Welcome to SL and Happy Holidays !

Tonylynn,
I would thoroughly endorse Janice's commendation for Natalia Zelmanov's website for buckets of info on all aspects of sl http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2006/11/build.html |
