My Landmarks on the Map Screen

For teleporting the method I prefer is to use the My Landmarks dropdown box from the big map. Awhile back I cleaned up all my unnecessary Landmarks in my inventory and reduced the number by at least half. Unfortunately they are still showing up in the My Landmarks dropdown which is making it harder and harder to use at this point.

A friend of mine cleaned hers up last week and was asking me the same question yesterday.

Any ideas?

I don't much use the drop down map landmarks. Though they are alphabetized, they are not categorized. I keep my landmarks in neat little folders in inventory just like my web bookmarks. Well, ideally they are neat anyway. So I have Sandbox Landmarks, Texture Landmarks, Hedonistic La--- uh, you get the idea.

When I double click on them in inventory it gives me the option to view the destination on the map, so I'm really only adding one extra step but still saving a lot of time searching a long list.

I also rename the landmark to something that makes more sense to me. "Realistic Hair" instead of "**** 0 Style," or whatever. You just have to be careful to rename only the first part of the landmark and not write over the sim name and coordinates (in case that part is actually used in the functioning of the landmark).

Did you empty your trash?

I think if they are still in your trash, they will show up in the map.

Also, if you have landmarks in product folders that you haven't removed yet, look for those.

I have probably one the neatest cleanest inventories in SL. I have no duplicate landmarks, there are none anywhere in my inventory other than in my Landmarks folder, they are all categorized.

I just prefer using that dropdown from the map because I only have to start typing the first letter or two and my landmark shows up. It's quicker and easier for me than going to inventory. Inventory I use when I can't specifically recall the place I want to go to.

I like the idea of renaming my landmarks. I've done that on a few of them, but doing more that way would be very helpful. I'm going to get at it now. I do still wish I knew how to clean up the ones on the map.

And again I ask... did you empty your trash? :)

LOL. Yes. Constantly. As I was cleaning my inventory I was excited to see the total numbers go down, down, down. I was able to go from about 14,000 items to 4,900. It took a lot of work.

There is nothing in my trash currently.

I was all set to try clearing cache to see if it would be necessary, but for me they disappear from the Map's list even while they're still in the Trash. Obviously, your mileage *does* vary.

Try this: Choose one of the landmarks that is showing up in the drop-down list which should not have. Open inventory and search for a unique (or nearly so) word from that "deleted" landmark.

My bet is that it will show up in an overlooked folder somewhere. If not, you have a genuine bug.

Excellent Idea. I feel silly I didn't think of it.

Mystery Solved
11-12-2007 20:29
The problem was with the way the items in landmarks were named. I was confused by all the digits added to landmarks to put them at the top. Now that I've renamed them all to something that makes sense and deleted a few duplicates I missed I now have a very nice and easy to read list that shows on my map screen.

Thank you to everyone for all your help!

Wow - how much time did that take? :D

I soooo wish I could clean inventory when not in SL. I go online with every intention of getting some more inventory cleaning done. Then I start talking to someone or remember this place I wanted to check out, or get a group notice about a new sale or some new item released, etc... and I end up only getting a little bit of inventory cleaned and sometimes end up adding as much to it as I've deleted.

Since I can't access the Forums from work, I could clean Inventory when I didn't feel like actually working. Or clean inventory when SL login is broke (lots of opportunity there). :p

It took restraint. I blocked everyone, sat on my beach and listened to music and went at it. It took a long time. I had to do it over a period of a couple of weeks. I'd have gone insane if I'd try to do it all at once.

Once I cleaned out junk freebies, unnecessary landmarks and notecards I had already dropped dramatically. The rest was harder work but seeing my total drop so quickly gave me the energy I needed.

And I bet that now your inventory is clean and neat, you keep it that way with a little daily housecleaning. :)

Never, never, never let your inventory get out of control, or it will dominate your SL experience. (Gee. I sound like Yoda!) Besides, how will you know that you have missing inventory, if you have no idea what all's in there?
