Whoo Hooo!

I don't really care one way or the other, but in the latest blog posting, LL is asking for feedback on what to do with Megaprims. They list several negatives about them and want more feedback.

I do find it interesting that the main creator of most of the Megaprims I have seen, is calling for them to be removed. Post 2 on the comments.

I don't care one way or the other, but I am impressed LL has even bothered to ask what WE think!

I have always loved Michael Linden, he has always been, very patient, understanding, helpful, knowledgeable and the list can go on and on.

I would love to see more blog or forum posts like this from the Lindens, it just gives me (and probably others) a good feeling and a reminder that you guys do really care what we think :)
Kudos!

What do do with them????
10-12-2007 15:02
Well, I haven't really had much use for them myself...though I did try using a giant sphere but I just ended up inside it, floating around....no idea what happened there.....

As for a suggestion as to what to do with them....em...well....I'm too much of a lady to say it out loud..

The challenge, at this point, is gonna be how much stuff has been made with them, and how many things will therefore be broken. I've only used one of them ever in a build, but there is so much material out there using them right now, including really nice things, that would defintiely be affected.

Agreed, overall I don't like mega-prims, although I've used them, but mainly I'm very surprised and pleased to see LL asking for feedback.

FWIW I like the idea of keeping them and allowing new ones, but only phantom so they can be used for texturing and other visual effects without bashing the physics engine.

They are immensely useful at the smaller sizes - particularly, the 20x20x.5 box & cylinder, and variations on that. If you built houses or landscapes, you would appreciate them. There are plenty of legitimate uses for megaprims, up to a certain size. But something tells me they are going to be banned indiscriminately, and I'm going to have to do a lot of replacements. :P

You should remove them all because they enable terrorism.

I think --someone check me here, I might be on shaky ground <grin>-- that Gene is being facetious.

I have seen them used for griefing many many times, so without a smilie, I take statements at face value.

I haven't ever seen it, although as has been said in the blog comments, griefers will use anything to create mayhem, like a .01 invisible screaming prim. Ban those too?? :P

I would hope that once they've gone through this exercise, if they decide to allow megaprims up to a certain size, they actually allow us to create new ones rather than relying on the small set that are currently available.

leave them in...get rid of the griefers if they use them...i dont doubt some have seen them used many times...but in my 2 and a half years i have never ever seen them used in anyway but great builds... never once by a griefer...

check my post in the other thread...honestly, check that store and stuff...the things that can be done with them are absulutely great...if there is a way, sure, make them only phantom...but their probably isnt...

I'd prefer the 20x20x20 at least, if we can create new ones. I do think that the ones that should be removed is are the ones that cover entire sims and up. Those are the ones I see in the Linden Sandboxes and tend to make building in them impossible.

The rest... *shrug*

I guess I restate what I wrote in the blog. I have the 'complete set', but I never used them nor plan to do so. My main reason is that it has been stated that LL could at any time remove them. I would not want to redo builds I had already done. I read where some stated they sell their builds with megaprims too, which would be very bad for their customers if LL removed them. But, builders have been warned, somewhat...

In general, what I think best is to:
1. remove all the ones larger than 256m
2. allow the creation of new prims up to 50mx50mx50m

It is obvious the existing megaprims are not a problem, so why not allow creation of prims larger than the current limit of 10mx10mx10m?

I have yet to have a use for the static-sized megaprims in my builds. But I don't know how many times I build something and need a prim that is 10.1m in any one dimension!

I find it ridiculous that the people who are for getting rid of megaprims do this based on the assumption that they're used by griefers and malcontent neighbors. Heck, why stop there, we should ban scripts and physical objects and particles as well. After all, they're used by griefers too. Bullets are physical objects launched at high velocity with the use of a script.
My opinion is that there should be a limit of 256 mts, and within those, prims over 50m must be kept phantom and in no case should any size over 10 mts. be made physical.
The largest amount of griefing is done using megaprims over 256 mts, and they are uterly useless for building anyways. So, those are the ones to ban. Why can't we make this distinction?

Great point. Lets just ban everyone. After all they might grief someday.

Agreed. Let's go further, though...increase the regular prim size limits, at both the large and the small ends. Instead of just a few varieties of megaprims, let's allow ANY prim to have a maximum dimension of 32m, and a minimum dimension of 1 mm.

And, while we're about it, let's add boolean addition and subtraction to the building tools.

As he mentioned on the blog post, Michael Linden has created a thread here in the forums to discuss the megaprim issue with residents.
