Happy Day.....my sister and brother have decided to take the SL plunge. LOL My question is.....they both would prefer that I teach them the ropes....so.....upon entering SL....if I whisk them off to my island, and they forego the initial tutorial....will that be a problem? I ask because I know at one time you had to get past OI before TP'ing out and as I have lost my mentor status (hehehe) I can't meet them there (or can I?) I know a couple times new people had asked about the tutorial HUD they were 'wearing' and couldn't get rid of....and since it's been 3 years since I went thru it, I'm not sure what my siblings will encounter.....and what I will need to do to get them past the mucky muck of initiation. thoughts, recommendations, suggestions???

Ok.....good enough. I'm thinking I can invite them via the land URL too, correct? That might help alleviate some of their jitters. LOL

LOL Just get their names, add to friends list, and TP them to you. With you teaching them, they'll learn faster and better than OI would teach them anyway

What Bradley said, plus I never went through any of it when I first joined. The friend who introduced me to SL showed me the ropes. I've been through it more recently with an alt and found that I hadn't mssed out at all by not going through it the first time.

Excellent....and I just found the 'refer a friend' thingy and used that......and it gives an option to land people right at my home location so they wont have to deal with OI. Yay. (this is what creating a gallery for my mom has done.....initially they were mildly fascintaed by SL.....and now that I've done this gallery.....they are both totally excited and in awe of what I was able to accomplish)

You can also give them an SLURL to your land, and have them use that prior to making their account, then use the "join" button in the SLURL web page. Or if they have the account already, but have not logged in yet, they use the SLURL and teleport from there. After they create the account, they are directed to the location in the SLURL on first login, rather than Linden Orientation.
Oh, and if you would like to take them through an orientation course that isn't the LL stuff, and that isn't very crowded, try going to the "RUCE 1" sim with them. That is the orientation sim I did for Rutgers University, and it is open to the public. The default landing point is the start of the course.

BTW, when they arrive, that will be their "home spot" until they change it... even if they don't otherwise have the right to "set home" there. If you TP them, they can end up with a home point that bypasses the landing spot or telehub.

So if someone logs in for the first time using the specify region/location box on the login screen, that'll let them have home set to wherever they login to? Or am I misreading that completely and should go punish myself?

Last I checked, specifying the region pull-down on the first time login had no effect. Has that been changed?
What sets your home point is teleporting out of the orientation/help island special region. It has that effect even if you already HAVE a home point... apparently mentors have to watch out for this.

Virtual Ability also has an awesome orientation course, basics, walking, flying, sitting, open a box (without it being stuck to your head for a week) chatting, changing clothes. Eventually, people with disabilities will be directed there but right now, anyone comes through that gateway. I did TP a friend straight to me on first arrival once, and taught her myself; she kind of knew what she wanted to do already, having watched SL for awhile. Worked out fine, so go for it.

Make it easy on them, and on yourself. 1. Walk them through the account creation process. Help them choose a name. 2. Show them how to download the viewer software onto their computer. 3. Have them log in. Help them set up their Preferences. 4. Log in yourself. 5. Send them a landmark to Caledon Oxbridge and tell them how to use it to go there. 6. Meet them there. Point them down the path of the red arrows and tell them, "These tutorials will tell you everything you need to know to get started." 7.Now log off and take a coffee break, or go sort inventory or something. Arrange with them to meet again in two hours. 8. Log back in, IM them. Now you can either meet them at Oxbridge, and then go off with them and explore, or you can... 9. Give them a landmark for The Free Dove and take another two hour coffee break. 10. Meet up again and spend an hour answering their questions. I bet they'll have a few. 11. Give them landmarks to a couple of interesting places and log off or go about your other business. 12. The next time you meet up, they'll be "old hands", probably with some interesting things to tell you about.

hehehe... Yup yup yup....I just spoke to my brother and he is SO wound up because of the gallery and our mom's art being out there. (my mom was infamous for wanting to be the center of attention, always lol) He also suggested I find a boat like our dad had and put that out in the water LOL too cute. Anyway...he's going to get his user ID and all that and when he logs in I'll meet him....we got that worked out. But.....now I have another question which I will start another thread for.....

I think it's really cool that you have family wanting to get in world. I have virtually no RL connection to SL, mostly because I wanted it that way at first. Now it would be very nice to know someone - to have a little crossover. I hope they really enjoy it.
I must come see your gallery. So many galleries, so little time. . .
