People Auction??

I stumbled across what appears to be an Auction of people/designers on the La Romantica sim:

The way I got there was via a store I was browsing in and the designer's info said that she was auctioning herself and whoever wins her would get a custom designed outfit with custom textures, a makeover, shoes, jewelry, and a photo shoot.

So are all of these other designers offering a similar deal (assuming they are all designers)?


Does anybody have a clue on what this is about?


ETA: Well, after searching on some of the people I have at least figured out that they are not all designers, so it is not some sort of designer auction.


ETA again: Okay, so Lil is apparently already partially asleep. After staring at these black triangle boxes below the BidBoxes, I finally saw the hovertext telling me to click to get info. Low and behold, each BidBox has one below it and clicking on it tells me what that particular person is auctioning -- some are dates, services, designs, etc....


/me wanders back to finish some stuff so she can put this tired brain-dead head to bed.

I've seen auctions like this before, to benefit various causes. It's a cool concept.

I thought this was going to be about slave auctions.

Auctioning off cool avatar names on ebay... might result name squatting instead of domain name squatting which is quite common in internet...

Relatively common in SL. Often used to raise money for a group-oriented sim that is otherwise largely non-commercial. Usually it is clearly stated what group or cause will benefit, and the individuals being auctioned may, or may not, get a cut of the profits from their own sale price.

Some of these auctions are for specific non-sexual services, like a clothing designer offering to make one custom clothing outfit, or a Builder offering three hours of custom building time. I suppose it is one way to raise funds for a charity.

More frequently, what is being sold is for a "date" with that individual, and just how far that goes and for how long is up to the buyer and seller to determine. Those are often called "Tail Sales" or "Slave Auctions", and personally, I stay away from those like the plague. They smack too much of prostituton for my liking.

I actually stayed and read the notecard for each person stating what you get if you win them and what they are doing with the money.

The vast majority were for a *date* and the majority of those said 'no sex' or 'sex is unlikely'. There were a few offering inworld services (like building, scripting, fashion consulting, etc), one would take you on a shopping spree and two were giving custom designed outfits.

What they were going to do with the money ranged from 'give it to charity' and 'help newbies' to 'keep it and spend it on myself'.


In any case, it was an interesting find with some entertaining reading.

As one of the people up for auction at the place your talking about, i can say most of the people up for auction are offering services, the problem is all of us up for auction are a tight knit group of friends and things that are not in the notecards, are known .... like my own is for a weeks time doing custom scripting.... and the people bidding know that, but the notecard says nothing about it, with the money raised going to help makeover newbies...

I think if you ask any of the people selling themselves what they are actually selling you'll find it's all services...
