Would Apez or JEVN more readily allow for me to manage my rentals (at a private island) from one central location?
Currently I use Hippo, and I love it, but having those boxes splattered all over the island is both cumbersome, and not very attractive.
I wonder if Apez of JEVN might better serve my needs in this area. Centralized rental processing from one object, at one location.

This is a good point, good back up plan, thx. I was just looking at how those other two products are configured and it seems like they are already setup to work in the way that I desire them to by default. That being said, learning a new rental system is never fun, so perhaps the tried and true Hippo system is system is the way to go.... hummmmm....

doesn't hippo also have a vendor type thing to show your rentals and allow you to let ppl rent from it directly? not in game so not able to look through the notecards

you can set up the hippo boxes however want. they dont have to be anywhere near the rental parcel. im thinking maybe you saw one the rental units you see malls and whatnot where everything is contained in one unit? 3ring has one their mall. i forget who makes it.

This is what I do with the hippo boxes. It allows you to use any prim and texture you want. I make a small wooden "for rent" sign, that changes to a small blue "occupied" sign with the apartment is rented. You definitely don't have to, and shouldn't, use that huge ugly box! It's also perfectly doable to put all the boxes in a central location. This looks a lot better and can be done in really cute, clever ways. The only drawback is that it's usually more confusing for the typical customer. It is much more straight forward if the renter is clicking the box at the proposed location.

I made all my Hippo rental boxes small and discreet, and the servers I made into small black spheres and used them to decorate the wall in my home. I have several sims, and the hippo servers for the rental boxes in all my sims are all located in one place (on the wall in my home). I monitor them from a single web-page too when not inworld.
Can't think of any other system that remotely comes close.
Join the Hippotech users group and ask for suggestions there.

I wonder if Apez of JEVN might better serve my needs in this area. Centralized rental processing from one object, at one location. You always could do that, even before version 4, but certain features will not work unless the box is on the parcel (if you have the door plugin, the box needs to be within 20m of the door). But v4 will allow you to report from a different parcel, so you could theoretically have your central rental area and then the box reports from an offset position.

I made 1 simple change to the door plugin for my new cloud city. Since the actual housing platforms can be hundreds of meters from the cool little access telepods on the city sidewalk where the rental boxes are. In the code change 'llShout' to 'llRegionSay'. This way the box can be anywhere in the region and still communicate with the door and security system.
Rentals with doors and full security that key automatically to the tenant when they pay? I'm down with that!

I love the rental box/door combo, still need to set them up in the apartment towers for the city I built
(I learned a lot as I was setting up the hippotech which I wish I had known before setting them up) I suggest setting up a few "sample" test ones to find the way that works best for you
I like seeing the rental boxes or signs, in the same spot as the place being rented

From: 3Ring Binder i used Lestats.... one box for all locations. 3ring, if I had scene your post earlier I probably would have tried out Lestats... What I ended up doing, based on some recommendations here in this thread, is place scaled down hippo boxes on stands at each parcel... Thanks to everyone who chimed in...

I had a centralized rental system. Tenants got confused over the simplicity of it. It's great that it saves on prims and easier to manage, but the individual boxes are easier for tenants.

It is also useful for prospective tenants to see instantly which units are rented and which ones are not, and being able to pay for it upon inspection, without having to go back to a central place and remember which one they wanted.

Don't do what I did at first... placed the rental boxes on the land for sale. That was the first thing they did was return my rental box lmao

I've often wondered why the centralised LL land sales system doesn't include rent options as well as sale.

Yesterday by coincidence, I happened on a centralized property rental system. My search for something else teleported me directly to it (I supposed that was intentional). Since I was fresh from this thread, I thought I'd see how it worked. I honestly could not figure out how to find the rentals. I'm not all that computer savvy, granted, but I don't think I'm an idiot -- I'm probably representative of the average user. A couple of them were showing rented, but wow, what determination those customers must have had.

People would have to show on map and then teleport to the reported location. If you wanted, you could make the boxes some decorative piece on the land that tenants can click to obtain the status, and use a vendor at your central office for people to pay - but this only works for initial rentals, I think. I haven't tested it to see if an existing tenant could pay the vendor for their unit.

I had a situation where i couldn't cut a 16 sm parcel out of a few plots, because there were already established tenants living there, so I just placed some boxes down right on the lot. Now, since they "own" the lot (again, this is private island land), who's to stop them from just deleting the box? and How would I know unless I check all the time? Too bad Hippo doesn't offer some sort of a warning email for deleted boxes...
