Does anyone make or know where I can buy scuplted prims to use for terraforming my land? Preferably mod so I can texture them myself. I'm sure they're not hard to make but I'm clueless how to start.

I think sculpties are hard to make - until there is an Inworld tool anyhow...
here is the official link on how to get started.... http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims _____________________

Terraforming is one of the many purposes that sculpties are essentially useless for, since they lack a collision map that follows the sculpted surface. The collision map is a simple box; some say sphere, but when you walk over a non-phantom sculptie it's handled as if it had an invisible box around it.
Means that sculpty mountains, caves, bridges and anything else that requires collision detection needs invisible regular prims in addition, so you end up with the same or even a higher prim count. _____________________

True, for surfaces that need to interact in some way, like people walking on them. But for VISUAL landscaping, sculpties are great. I have quite a number of them in my waterfall and creek. There's a dandy tool called The Rock Wizard that makes the creation of sculptie rocks easy, and it's available in both a "regular" or a "builders" (full perms for the created rocks) version. |

I did see on Slexchange a device that makes sculpted texture of your sims shape but I don't think it does anything else.
Not exactly sure what the purpose for having something like that though. It probably not what you're looking for. But there are terraforming tools, some are even free. But I have never heard of sculpties doing that. By way there is some easy to use tools to make sculpties but they are tricky sometimes to figure out but easiest are Rokuro, Sculptypaint, and there is another interesting one I am checking out called Math Sculptor. |

Sculpted prims could be pretty useful for creating sky beaches; you really wouldn't need a lot of prims to do that, especially if you use megaprims. Just a few gently sloping prims for beach and water and you're all set to enjoy sunsets away from your neighbor's prim trash.

Sculpted landscaping is quite easy
It is doing it effectively that can be difficult. You only need an image editor.First, paint a gradient from right to left, using pure black to pure red. In another layer, paint one using pure black to pure green from top to bottom. Now, paint the height stuff in a third, pure blue layer. Set all layers to linear dodge mode in photoshop, or additive mode in other editors. You can approximate collisions by setting the sculpt(s) phantom and using transparent conventional prims to roughly outline the collision shape you want. I was commissioned for one project to give a plot a custom beach, because the estate had different textures for elevations. What I did was mess with the raw data, and used four 20x60 megaprims with sculpts applied to get the shape, then custom textured the sculpts, using alpha for it to blend. I then tweaked the terraforming so that the land's collision itself would work. |

Off-topic slightly but....

Best use I have seen for sculpties so far was at the AKK horse ranch, which has an area two sims wide to ride around in. They have a large-ish 3D map of the sims near the TP hub showing the sims in detail, in a "You Are Here" kind of way. I was so impressed I took a snapshot.
