Hi all. Does anyone know how to solve this problem ? When I make my character wear a necklace, wich is categorized as "undershirt" I can't wear a bra, since this is also "undershirt". Same problem with tattoos en many other things.

You might find this thread of interest, Veronique:

/109/02/282730/1.html

A resident was more or less browbeaten into withdrawing his service, which might have solved your problem.

It would be good to read your views on the issue.

Hi Veronique...

A lot of clothing designers will create all layers of clothing just for this reason. Meaning if you purchase an outfit, the top of that outfit would be the undershirt, the outer shirt and the jacket, which would allow you to wear the necklace (undershirt) under either the outer shirt or the jacket layer.

There isn't a way to change the way this works, unless you purchase a necklace that is worn as an "attachment" rather then an undershirt layer.

That would be my recommendation... and to keep your eyes out for clothing designers that offer "all" layers with your purchase.

Good luck!

Seems like the 'browbeaten' one was performing a service that may or may not have been legal.

Veronique, this is a problem that is common to everyone in SL. There are only a few clothing 'layers' and unfortunately until Linden Lab changes something in that respect, we all have to pick and choose what layers to wear.

One possible solution is instead of wearing a necklace as a 'clothing layer' you can get and wear necklaces made of prims - that won't interfere with the 'undershirt' layer etc. as it attaches in a different way.

No help to the OP, but apropos the "browbeaten" service: Turns out that this service as implemented would be short-lived anyway. The viewer protocol is soon to change such that individual clothing layer textures will simply no longer be sent under any conditions.

We really need more layers and the end-user ability to migrate a clothing asset from one layer to another compatible layer. (Similarly but even more off-topic: end-users need the ability to change all the upload parameters for animations, such as priority, loop, and ease-in and -out.)

sorry for OT and don't mean to hijack but Qie can you explain this to me more fully or tell me where I can go to get this info? Sorry to be dense but I'm blonde (or used to be) and it's sunday :P

I think someone mentioned it at SLU in a thread about transparent avatar skin. A Linden told someone that they will be going to just transferring baked textures rather than individual layer and baked textures. I've always wondered why they send the layer textures.

I'm pretty sure I didn't hear about it until more recently, but here's an Office Hour transcript from January that has some bearing on what's changing and why it was as it was: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Open_Source_Meeting/2009-01-15 -- starting about 14:51.

Note that this is (yet) another reason to force obsolescence on older client versions sooner rather than later (which they hate to do anymore).

Why wear a bra, Veronique? Surely your breasts don't need support in sl?

If they bounce like this, a bra might help:

We need to have the ability to specify which layer each item of cloth is to be worn on.
Having 3 static layers for upper and lower is just senseless and I cannot for the life of me understand why they did it this way.

Could you imagine if attachments could only be worn on the attachment point they were created for?

Is there a JIRA to vote on someplace? If not there should be.

I spoke with Nyx during Q's office hours today, intending to float the idea of being able to choose the layer on which a particular garment is worn, and learned (what many may already know?) that they're working on making multiple garments able to be worn on a single layer, in user-specified order. This is to coincide with availability of the alpha-masking (aka transparent avatar textures) feature. And all that is tentatively targeted for viewer release 1.25. Still some details being ironed out, including the UI for specifying the order. Time to rez an avatar will depend on the total number and size of textures across all layers.

Nyx mentioned that allowing choice of which layer a garment is worn "would be a substantial amount of work" but is in fact one of the details under consideration.

(IMHO, one take-away from this is that clothing creators who are not yet bundling all relevant layers of their garments had better get with the program and quickly, or face complete obsolescence. If we get within-layer ordering of clothes and not choice of layer, folks are not going to be patient anymore with creators who don't give them the flexibility.)
