From my old post at /142/9c/160009/1.html#post1382309
Excessive Tooltips Suck! The tooltips that say "Search for places, events, people, and more" and the like - I have got the point. The function of the buttons has managed to penetrate my thick dense skull. I would like to be able to easily turn off tooltips in different parts of the interface. Build button is for building, fly button makes me fly. Chat button is for chat. Mini-map button is for the mini-map. There's a pattern there, and I think I've manage to pick up on it. The "Ctrl-[ for previous tab" and "Ctrl-] for next tab" that come out of the near constantly flashing group IM tabs suck with extra negative pressure. I don't care much about that option, but if I did, I suspect that several thousand times of seeing the message would probably manage to convey that idea to me. There's only one "tooltip" I really want, the LSL tooltips in the script editor. You can adjust the tooltip delay in debug settings, but that affects the LSL help. Tooltip madness needs to end! Excessive uncontrollable tooltips suck! There is a file you can edit to eliminate the button tooltips, its C:\Program Files\SecondLife\skins\xui\en-us\panel_toolbar.xml on a default US English installation. Replace the parts that say things like tool_tip="Start flying. Use E/C or PgUp/PgDn to fly up and down." with tool_tip="" _____________________

Almost a cure ?

For other readers who may be interested...
(My OS is Vista Home Premium) 1- The file path has changed a little in the latest viewer, but I did find it. The path on my system is... C:\Program Files\SecondLife\skins\default\xui\en-us\panel_toolbar.xml 2- I can open the file in Notepad but cannot save changes.. 3- I downloaded the free Microsoft XML editor, but so far have not been able to save a new version of the toolpad file. (The app is called XML Notepad) 4- Maybe I need to learn more about using the XML editor-- sure looks like a real hassle to just change a few items ![]() From my old post at /142/9c/160009/1.html#post1382309/142/9c/160009/1.html#post1382309 There is a file you can edit to eliminate the button tooltips, its C:\Program Files\SecondLife\skins\xui\en-us\panel_toolbar.xml on a default US English installation. I have a suspicion that on Vista the program files are protected from being modified by users, and that you need to run notepad as an administrator or something like that.
I don't have Vista, thank goodness, so maybe someone that knows more about it can help better. It certainly is a pain; I don't do it, although I have done it, because I'd have to do it for the SL Release, Release Candidate, Beta, Cool Viewer, Nicholaz, Imprudence, Dreamworld, OpenSim and whatever other viewers I have installed. _____________________

Finale (for now)

After a whole lot of time and effort researching this Vista OS issue, it appears that Microsoft has intentionally disabled most Vista computers' ability to record from speaker output. Several sources say it's an attempt to foil those who would be copying audio illegally.
Apparently, there are two work-arounds; One is to clamp a headphone speaker to the built-in mike, such as on a web cam integrated into a laptop screen (I am using such a laptop), and the other work-around is to use a double-male stereo plug picking up output from the headphone jack, and feeding into a microphone input jack. Thanks all for taking an interest in this ![]() _____________________

hmmm now what???? Whether it's worth bothering with the comment deletion is a matter of judgment. I think the original question here is answered already, so it would be a low priority item. If one posted a reply in the wrong thread in a case where it would seriously mess us someone else's attempt to conduct a discussion it would be courteous to delete it. It's good to know you can delete a reply, but you can't delete your thread, or at least if you can you don't have long to do it. I don't think you can delete a thread at all. I ought to know this but the memory is not as good as it used to be. You can edit a thread title for a brief time, so if you make a spelling or typing mistake or forget a word and if you notice it fast enough, you can fix it, but that window of opportunity is not very long. If you decide you'd rather not have started a thread at all, right after posting it, while you can still edit the title, you might want to change it to a boring question, rather than "deleted, do not respond", because the boring question will get a few responses and fade away, while the request to ignore might produce a thread so big it will engulf the entire universe. _____________________

Did you try running Notepad as an adminstrator and seeing if that will let you save the file?

And thanks... ![]() you can also turn off the tool tips in your preference window (if you mean those popups that happen when you do something in SL, that explain what you did and such) it is under edit > preferences > popups > disable by choice, or disable all these popups (I am guessing that these are what you are referring to) _____________________

The tooltips refererred to are the ones that appear when you mouse over the buttons at the bottom of the screen. The buttons that say Fly, Build, Map, Mini-map, etc., and in particular the chat entry window.
These are not affected by the popups options in preferences. _____________________
